Default The Gibson/Les Paul Appreciation Thread

Haven’t seen any threads focusing on Gibsons or Les Pauls, so here goes.

Feel free to talk about your Gibby’s or Lester Polfuss’ or any that may tickle your fancy.

I have to say if money was of no object (and if they were available) the two Les Pauls I’d need to own are:

    Clapton’s 1959 “Beano” Burst

    Billy Gibbons’ “Pearly Gates” 1959

Here are a few pics of the ones I own.

KS5150, I expect pictures of the R9 immediately.

    2013 Gibson Les Paul Traditional
    - Replaced the pickups with Throbak PAFs
    - Replaced the Pots and Caps with a VIP Vintage spec wiring harness (PIO caps and Centralab pots)

    2017 Gibson SG Standard
    - Classic 57 pickups
    - Stock wiring harness

    1977 Greco Les Paul (Japanese)
    - Pickups were in the guitar when I purchased it last year
    - Bridge: Seymour Duncan 59
    - Neck: Dimarzio PAF
    - Stock wiring harness

This is mine. A 1987 Gibson Les Paul "Studio Standard". It's a Studio with binding, and other things that model doesn't come with today.

Beautiful Studio, right there. Don’t see many with binding or a finish like that.

It’s a 2015. It has easily the best pickups I’ve ever played. 1959 tributes.

Are these heavier than most other guitars?

I got to see Vic Johnsons white LP up close...and while it was absolutely one of thee most beautiful guitars I have ever seen, it looked really heavy.

They can be quite heavy. They vary from about 8.5-10lbs. 10lbs being the heaviest of the heavy. Les Paul Customs can be very heavy.

There is debate amongst aficionados about whether lighter LP’s sound better.

Very nice. Were they stock with the guitar or did you add them after?

Thanks for not saying, "what a dumb non musician question."

Here's a pic of the guitar I was talking about. I saw other's too in this same setup, but the white LP was separate at the time.

Stock. I have done nothing but keep the etune system charged and change string gauges. The pickups were only available that year. I’ve bought every set I’ve seen for sale.

Of course. If you’ve never picked one up, you can only go off of what it looks like, so it’s not a dumb question at all. They all look pretty heavy and substantial but some can be quite light.

To my eyes, that LP looks heavy but it could be chambered. It depends on the wood, obviously. It’s a custom so I’d bet on it being heavy.

Billy Gibbons has all his touring Les Pauls completely chambered/gutted to relieve as much weight as possible.

My '97 Standard. I cant remember if it had it in it when this photo was taken but its got a Whole Lotta Humbucker in the bridge possy now. The necks a Burstbucker from memory. I haven't played this guitar for almost 2 years now. I gotta dig it out and have a jam on it. Actually, I think I've only played it once since the new pup. I cant even remember what it sounds like....

I can’t stand chambered gibsons. I have another one that is a custom and it’s solid wood. Cost me more to have it made but it’s worth it. Tone wise and sustain wise.

What a finish on that plain top. Beautiful guitar, Dutchie. Stunning.

If you’re ever, for some reason... looking at selling it....
