    Default Flanger on Heat About It Later Question

    So I’ve started to record this song which is one of my favorite Van Halen songs. And it’s actually a fairly easy song I think honestly, but I’m just curious about the flanger.

    I’ve been going back-and-forth and I’ve been recording it different ways, and I’m just not quite sure what the right way is. Here are the options I think it is and I would appreciate some feedback.

    1. Flanger on the entire song.
    2. Flanger on intro and all the chorus riffs.
    3. Flanger in entire first half of song but not after solo.

    And listening several times that’s kind of what I came up with as what I think one of them is. I know during the solo obviously he isn’t using the flanger so I’m not including that. I’m basically just talking about the main rhythm parts, not so much the solo or the second guitar which also doesn’t have a flanger.

    I’ve already run through this thing twice and I don’t wanna record it a third time without having a good idea of what the fuck is going on. .

    Thank you!

    According to the isolated guitar tracks, it sounds like the left channel's rhythm track is flanged the entire time, whereas the right channel lead does not have Flanger. There also appears to be no flanger from the solo onwards.
    There's a thin line between genius and insanity. I like to dance on it.

    Default Flanger on Heat About It Later Question

    The problem is sometimes on those Guitar Hero tracks the left guitar is dropped out for the right so you can’t hear what’s going on in the other channel there. I also posted this on our Facebook page and I’ve been getting a lot of different answers.

    Yeah to me it sounds like the flanger isn’t used on the second half of the song after the solo at all.

    Brett, it's been a long time since I messed with HAIL, but I was going a little psycho with it years ago, and timing the sweeps with a stop watch. Yeah.
    I can tell you the intro sweep speed is faster than the verse parts, and like a wacko, I documented it;

    I think it’s on all the time. Until the solo. Then it’s a lot of Eventide.

    Default Flanger on Heat About It Later Question

    So what I wound up doing was recording two rhythm tracks, one with the flanger and one without. Then I pieced together one track from what I thought the song sounded like, which is basically the flanger on up until the first bridge. I also turned the flanger effect much lower than the intro because it definitely is not as pronounced during the rest of the song. I tried meshing the two mixes together but with the flange sweep it just didn’t sound tight enough for me, so I went with one track from the two takes.
