Mike Soldano talks EVH's SLO 100s
Not sure if this was posted here yet.
Had no idea EVH's first SLO was purchased after OU812 and likely during the recording of F.U.C.K. That makes much more sense when you hear the tones on those albums.
So, it can be deduced that right around that time (1988-1990) EVH was wanting new tonal options (likely more gain) outside of Marshalls. Soldano, Custom Audio Electronics 3+ Preamps (used on The Dream is Over), etc. He bought an early SLO and another with a loop in early 1990.
Also interesting is on the 3rd SLO invoice, which he bought in August 1990 JUST after SRV's death/crash, there is a "n/a" charge for "Overdrive Preamp Mod." I wonder what mod was done to the preamp on that SLO? Whatever it is, that amp (the EVH striped one that Soldano talks about) also has the Slave Out installed.
So, it is likely that he was slaving THAT amp into the power section of his Marshall(s) during the recording of Carnal Knowledge, and that is when James Brown at Peavey came in for the design of the 5150, as "that [the SLO slaved into a Marshall] is what Peavey had to beat."How open-minded do I have to be before my brains start spilling out?

One of my favourite EVH tones, behind Balance. Ed really was a whiz in terms of gear and rigs.
There's a thin line between genius and insanity. I like to dance on it.
"It's all success if it's what you need. Do what you like and do it honestly"
"If you want to be a rock star or just be famous, then run down the street naked, you'll make the news or something. But if you want music to be your livelihood, then play, play, play and play! And eventually you'll get to where you want to be." RIP EVH

Doubt very highly the SLO was slaved into the Marshall on “Carnal Knowledge”. That’s straight-up Soldano, besides the CAE III+ unit you mentioned, used on Judgement Day, as well. Although, he played either the Frankie or 5150 on that track.....can’t remember, don’t care, and hate the tone.
Was always under the impression he started experimenting w/ Soldanos during “Sucker In a Three Piece”, but perhaps that was a different unit used in front of the Marshall, or one of Mike Soldano’s modified Yamahas, which I believe is how he made his name. Or none of the above.
So long ago.......
