Default House votes to legalize weed

The House on Friday passed a landmark bill that would remove federal penalties on marijuana and erase cannabis-related criminal records.

Friday’s vote reflects the shift in American and global views on marijuana over the past decade: Polls show support for legalization has increased 20 percentage points, to 68 percent, since Colorado and Washington state legalized weed in 2012. One in 3 Americans now lives in a state where marijuana is legal for adults to use. Red states including Mississippi and South Dakota voted to allow medical or recreational marijuana on Election Day. The United Nations voted earlier this week to loosen treaty restrictions on marijuana.

    I support this.

I would rather see alcohol listed as a controlled substance. Maybe for in home use only.

    Wonderful. Finally.

I’d rather see people using marijuana than alcohol any day of the week!

I may be in the minority here but when I saw this I thought, "oh great". I get it, a lot of people like it. Hell, I smoked it for about 15 years but quit shortly after we had our first child. Have had a few puffs here and there but probably no more than 5 in the last 20 years. The problem I have with all of it now is that everyone feels they can smoke it anywhere now and maybe my sense of smell has changed or everyone now buys shitty weed but it all smells skunky to me. You literally can't go anywhere without being hit in the face with it. My family and I recently stayed in a hotel and both nights the room and hall smelled like weed. Do some outdoor dining and there's always some asshole lighting up. Hell, even take a walk in the park and there it is.
I used to jog but the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass.

Still has to clear the senate though. And if it’s put up before Jan 20th it won’t get signed.

This is fine I suppose, but like drinking in public, there needs to be a lid on smoking in public. And a way to determine those who “wake and bake” and go to school, work or are behind the wheel under the influence.

I am fine with legalizing it but that said, its not safe. Its not any better than alcohol IMO. Pain management? Sure. Recreational use which means you need it every day well you are no different than an alcoholic. I have met plenty of drunks and potheads. They pretty much operate in the same sphere of being incoherent.

That said ok with removing the penalties or at least the Federal ones.

My small county court docket would clear up quite a bit if they ever decriminalized it here. Maybe these local cops could concentrate on all the meth that's around instead of hauling people to county for finding a joint on a traffic stop

This. As long as the republicans hold the senate, it won’t get thru.

I think that there's less bodies scraped up off of the highways due to pot, than due to alcohol, so I think that pot is the lessor of the two "evils" and should be treated as such. Just because the result of alcohol abuse is not in your face or in your back yard, doesn't mean it's not there. I mean, it's not very sexy today to talk about alcohol abuse, is it??

Yup. Not going anywhere. But as LM said in another thread, it's a step. Whether it's the right direction or not is up to you. I happen to think it is, but it's not near the top of my list of issues.

Republicans really need to let go of the issue. All they're doing is prolonging the inevitable. That's not a winning strategy.

I bet there's a shitload of Republican senators who smoke it or eat their cookie edibles with milk at night and watch Netflix.

Fear of pot is getting really annoying. Yeah, I know all the personal stories etc and I'm sorry for that but that isn't enough of a yellow warning light to stop the wave of progress.

People who say pot doesn't affect people negatively, or as badly as alcohol, are full of shit. Mrs JD has made it a habit of showing scans of human brains after habitual use of pot to her students over the years.

Both are bad. Legalize it, sure ok, let the state regulate it heavily and tax it heavily, but also make harsh penalties for those that abuse it. I, for one, wouldn't want a bunch of potheads operating power tools, forklifts, boom lifts, cranes, heavy equipment, putting up shoring and decking for post tension decks, etc on my construction sites any more than any drunks.

They already are though regardless of legalization. You know this.

"Progress". Wouldn't exactly say that's the correct term, except for medicinal uses.

Oh they're not usually that hard to spot. Or weed out and remove or at least keep very close watch. No pun intended.
