Fake EVH autographs on eBay

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised by this, but I just checked eBay for autographed EVH items, and I was shocked at how many bogus EVH "autographed" items are for sale. Some of them are blatantly bad fakes, and people are still bidding on them. It literally looks like over 75% of the items on there are forgeries. It takes a special kind of person to try and profit off of someone's death.

Ya, they're scum. I've got many autographed items, almost all signed in front of my eyes. None from anyone with the last name Van Halen, I would be very careful and only buy from a reputable seller with proof of signature. I've been tempted with some VH "signed" items I've seen on there over the years, just couldn't bring myself to buy if I didn't know if it's authentic.

I wouldn't do it. Most of the autographed stuff on their is fake. Anywhere, really. Even the "proof of authenticity" is fake most of the time.

Us, movie poster collectors tried to get them to recognize all the fakes littering the site 15 years ago, to no avail. They only consider the high end... Watches, jewelry, Prada handbags...memorabilia is at the bottom of the list.

Authenticating a signature has to be really difficult. When I've seen people do it on TV it strikes me more as pseudo science than something that is actually reliable. I can't even make my own signature look the same twice, so I find it really hard to believe that a swoop here or a tilted line here is proof of legitimacy or a fake. I know I forged my mom's signature enough times in school that anyone can copy a signature if they practice it enough times

A few years ago there was an auction for a fundraiser and they had a signed Diver Down vinyl. My wife pushed me to bid on it for charity's sake and of course I ended up winning the thing. It has one of those "authenticity" certificates and supposedly you can go on their website to see the picture of it being signed, but of course I could never find it on there. Who knows whether it's real or not, but I like to think it is

Worked with a few Graphologists in my time, at first I thought it was a snake-oil science, but they are pretty convincing. Of course these were some of the most credentialed Graphologists on the planet.
