So that's Ed... just in the intro... ?

Very cool but... cash grab for David Garfield... if it's been around since '96.

I really have no need for the remaining six and a half minutes after Ed's intro.

I know Eddie is on that intro but thinking that he is playing throughout. Sounds like the sustainer is towards the end with the wah. Some tremelo picking in the middle. Unsure

The intro is obviously Ed. When the choruses hit you hear some sustainer screams. That's Ed too.

But the two guitar solos and the rest of the guitar work don't sound like Eddie at all. If it is, then he's channeling a lot of Hendrix-isms, busted out some Hendrix effects pedals, and is holding back from his usual mid-90's bag of licks...which would honestly impress the hell out of me. There's literally one note I hear that sounds like Ed's vibrato, but the rest just doesn't sound like him to my ears. And we know have reference from the Paul Shaffer All Star Band that mid-90s Ed wasn't one to change his style for a cover tune.

All said...what a freakin' bait and switch this was. I was hoping to hear something more like the cover of Fire that Ed did with Lukather and Sheehan.

    Thumbs up

    That's a killer intro!

Thanks for sharing it here, Danielle.

I can't tell if the Uni-Vibe and Wah stuff is him. I doubt it is. It would at least be somewhat evident if it were.

I would say the intro has nothing to do with the rest of the song, but what would you do if someone told you write an intro to a Hendrix tune that doesn't have one? I would turn them down, probably.

I think it's Ed throughout. There is one spot with a bit of tremolo picking that sounds like him.

I don’t think this is “new” per se. I have it on a bootleg CD from the early 2000s. I think it was from the Jeff Porcaro tribute stuff Ed was a part of. The intro is definitely Ed, but I think Ed played bass on the track?

Note: the version I have doesn’t have Ed noodling around on the beginning of the track like this version has.

I'd say the exact opposite. That noise at the beginning left a bit to be desired.

And then it was Landau the rest of the way. Ed didn't play those leads.

Not a complaint in the slightest, because Mike's a scary stellar player.

"The cut, which appears on Garfield’s new EP, Guitar Heroes OTB, Vol. 1, also features singer and guitarist Michael Landau, bassist Will Lee and drummer Simon Phillips."

How is it a cash grab when you can hear it for free???

    Wtf?
I donno if it's a cash grab, but the timing only a month after Ed's passing is suspicious. Did Eddie agree for this to come out?

This has been around for years.
Ed played on 2 tracks on Garfield's album, it was recorded as a tribute to Toto's drummer, Jeff Porcaro.
He played on "If Six Was Nine" and the Dylan track, "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry".
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

David Lee Roth, Edward Van Halen, Michael Anthony, Alex Van Halen, Sammy Hagar.
