K, in this thread there are a number of things that are being said that truly floor me. I don't believe I've heard them before.

    1) Dave plays keyboards. First I've heard he had any ability on the instrument and had played keyboard on the 6-pack
    2) Dave wrote instrumentals for VH. First I've ever heard this.
    3) Dave writing specifically Intruder - this would be BY FAR the darkest piece of music Dave has ever written.

So maybe I spaced out while this was discussed in another thread at one point. Maybe it was like the day my kids were born or something. Coz I've been here 20 years and don't remember any discussion about this. Either that or I'm just getting old and forgetting.

Dave didn't write Eddie's part, where Eddie plays slide with a Schlitz Malt Liquor beer can...

    Or those crazy screaming notes...

Dave also only played a note of two on Intruder, nothing fancy at all.

But he did play the keyboard part.

I caught SRV 3 times, once at the Hollywood Palladium in '84 and twice at The Greek Theater ('85 and '89 w/BB King). The Palladium show was excellent, one of those shows you know you're seeing an artist right at their peak right at the cusp of something bigger. The '85 show was just ok, partly because it was a bigger outdoor shed and Vaughan was pretty fucked up - maybe EVH 2004 burnout. The '89 show, he had cleaned up but the crazy fire was kind of tamed, his playing and the songs more mellow.

The thing I always liked about SRV, especially his first 3 albums is he had probably the greatest guitar tone of anyone at the time, arguably better than Eddie in the mid 80's.

Dave played the keys on Tattoo as well. I am genuinely shocked that you didn't already know these things.

Yup i missed the tattoo credit, probably because i dont care much about the song. However for Intruder, i see Dave credited on the wikipedia page. Now I'm wondering, was he credited on the original vinyl pressing?!? I dont remember it at all.

Eddie's my guy and always will be, but Stevie Ray Vaughan is awesome too.

I like Hendrix too--mainly the Band of Gypsies stuff. That "Live at the Fillmore East" album smokes.

SRV was an absolutely incredible player, but I just don't like his songs that much, and probably his singing even less. My cousin was always trying to get me to like him, playing his cds all the time when we were kids. Probably his second favorite player after Ed.

Well, you can't complain about his singing on this one ...

That's the fun part of surfing....finding out old trivia tidbits & stuff previously unkown before.

David had to come up with something since it was his thing with the video.

Also- In Charlotte NC 82 EVH actually did use a real Slitzh beer can during the live performance of Intruder onstage

If we already knew every single thing ther'd be no reason to even surf at all. But you never know what will pop up.

I always find new old stuff. Just recently ran across a batch of pictures & anecdotes from a VH media promotional visit to South America in 1981. They didnt actually tour or perform there at that time in 81 which makes it a rare previously unknown funfact.

Zillions of other things too. All little trivia tidbits.

For example- Those pictures from the " alledged" dinosaur video published in The Inside magazine were not an actual video per se but a European TV lip synch appearance in Italy 1981.

this is a weird thread. whatever, I listened to the song and the intro sounded like something Ed would do, I didn't make it far into the song, I don't think Ed played on the main part of the song. The solo I listened to didn't sound like Ed either to me.

    I like Intruder.

The keyboard part to Intruder is something you can teach anybody within a few minutes. Not to diminish Dave but I am pretty sure his skill on harmonica or guitar is far more advanced that his skill as a keyboardist.

Going to get ripped on for this but since other people have dipped their toes into the fire....what the hell? I think SRV was an incredible blues guitarist. Yes he dabbled in a little bit of jazz voicings too but wasn't as developed with that as lets say Danny Gatton. Anyway incredible guitarist but I don't think he revolutionized the instrument like a Hendrix or Eddie. Inspired the hell out of people with the blues and blues rock guitar playing? Sure. However I always look at him as a guy who took what others did before and just played it faster, more ferocious and amped it up. Like lets say Eddie simply took what Clapton gave him simply just blazed away. Like the early club days where he was pretty much a pentatonic player and had yet incorporated the things that made him Eddie Van Halen. Like Clapton with a Monster Energy Drink. Obviously he would have had this great timing, probably the ability to write songs, etc but something like Eruption would have been different. You wouldn't get Mean Street. You wouldn't get the outro solo to Drop Dead Legs.

Now to be honest, SRV had to work within the confines of the blues and blues rock. That genre is very conservative with what you are allowed to do. Would have been interesting had he been allowed to do something a bit more outside of that confine. This isn't coming out right but I remember I think what Joe Bonamassa said about Eddie and his passing. He said there are a lot of great guitarists but only a few that totally change the way one changes guitar. Eddie was one of those guys. While SRV was incredible, talented, and was a great guitarist, I just don't look to him as a guy who revolutionized guitar playing. Popularized a genre? Took it to another level? Sure. Redefined a genre? No. Doesn't mean he is a hack or shouldn't be respected. I just look at Hendrix and Eddie as different cats.
