I recall Ed once claimed Gary was his musical soulmate and "long lost brother."

I do think Al was the only true soul mate as Dave's Driedel posted.

Yeah, I can understand some people saying Sam and Ed were musical soul mates. But I don't feel that either. Not to sound harsh.

I think there is more of a "musical" connection between Ed and Dave. Not that either of them would care to hear that. But at least in the music they produced.

Truth be told, Ed doesn't need a counterpart or a soul mate. The time with Dave, though, they were young and hungry and on fire.

Ed and Sam were musical soulmates for a little while. That's when they stood on top of the world.

Wolfe and Al could turn the initial process over to somebody like Ted Templeman, or maybe even Bruck, or somebody they trust to make a first pass at getting the stuff listenable, and even making judgements as to what might be something that could/should be reasonably released. That would make the task of Alex and Wolf deciding what is good enough, when they get around to it, a lot quicker. Especially if that process began while Wolf was active with Mammoth WVH. Granted, this is an optimistic view of the timeline, but doesnít seem impossible to me.

It just doesnít seem all that likely to me that they will bring in one of the old singers to either complete songs that were unfinished for release. Certainly doesnít feel like the relationship with Dave is very solid. Same with Hagar. And, if either singer were asked to do that, Iím guessing theyíd need to re-record all of the vocals. Neither singer can sing in the range today that was recorded back then. The music may be in a key neither guy could hit currently?

Hagar did say he believed there were 4 songs from his era that were recorded and not released. He mentioned a couple were from the FUCK sessions, and assume I Want Some Action would be another one. But he also noted there was a reason they werenít released at the time, basically they didnít think they were up to par.

Wolf made a similar comment about how the stuff that hasnít been released probably wasnít for a reason. He also said Ed had made clear his wishes on what should be done with unreleased music. And Ed has commented at least once before that someday ďall of this stuff will come outĒ. Makes me curious as to what eventually will come out.
Steve Lukather re-recorded I Want Some Action as a solo release titled Twist the Knife, where Ed played bass. I still like the unreleased Hagar version better, especially with Al on drums.

I think youíre onto something here....I also have a suspicion Al hasnít forgiven Sam for some of the dirty laundry he has aired over the years in interviews and most notably Samís book...Given how private the Van Halenís are about their business affairs and private lives, Sam may have gone a bit too far in Alís eyes...

I hope Iím wrong and that eventually they patch things up.

Alex may very well have been Eddie's only true "musical soulmate", but I sincerely doubt that either one of them would have become the legends they are without the contributions of Dave, Sam and Mike.

I know we speculate until the cows come home, but it wouldnt surprise me if Wolf doesnt already have a handle on what to do as far as the vaults go. Did Ed have some things sectioned? Like did he have finished, unreleased songs over here and just guitar music over here, etc. Hell, as far as we know, he might have walked Wolf thru this whole process. Al might know where some stuff is too. I mean we really have no grip on just how Ed had things in 5150. I'm not saying Wolf doesnt have his work cut out for him in going thru stuff. Maybe Ed called Al over and he told both Wolf and Al what to do and what not to do. The speculation on how Ed might have handled this is just as wide as how we speculate on how Wolf will do this. I have a hard time thinking Wolf is like "Nope, Pop didnt show me a thing."
June. 1984. Kemper Arena. Kansas City, Mo. My very first concert. The lights go out. The spotlights rotate over the crowd while a wailing guitar overtakes the screams and cheers. The opening riff of "Unchained" begins as a lone spotlight illuminates Eddie Van Halen. By himself. I was never the same after that.

Yeah Sammy's always terrible with numbers, so I'm sure it's "around 4":

    Numb to the Touch
    Out of the Ether
    You Never Know
    Between Us Two
    '04 song

There was also "The Wish" that may have partially been used for "Once" and Sam's "Returning of The Wish" but who knows if it was recorded or not with lyrics. The way Sammy talked about it from what I remember sure sounds like they did. For Balance, "Backdoor Shuffle" that became CGTSNM might have had lyrics. "Hendrix Jam" that Mike mentioned probably not because of it just being a working title (and I'm sure because "The Trouble with Never" for obvious reasons). "I Remember" and "Shaker" were some Balance names thrown out there, too.

And I believe "Reincarnation" was the '04 TBOBW leftover.

Ed mentioned 4 keyboard orientated songs that were left over from FUCK but he also said that they had enough material for 2 records. so it's possible there are more left over tracks from FUCK. there were at least 4-5 songs that were referenced around Balance as being left over. they also said there were a couple of left over songs from 5150 and OU812 so there is a decent amount of finished (or almost finished) songs from Sam's time in the band
