He was much more receptive to female fans though, which I can understand as he was in his early 20s and out on the road across the USA for the first time. This was before they exploded with "More Than Words". I'm not saying he acted like an asshole or anything, but he definitely gave off a vibe of I do not want to interact with you unless you are a good looking female. In my case, I think he also did not like me standing next to him for even a couple seconds as I am very tall (6'7") and he is a short man. I would guess he is around 5 and a half feet tall.

Gary Cherone, on the other hand, was one of the nicest musicians I have ever met. He came over and initiated conversation with me and my friends first. I had a t-shirt on with "The Who" and their old Bullseye logo on it, and he came over to tell me that he was a massive Who fan and we started talking about our favorite Who albums and songs. He was just as cordial the second time I met him as well in '95.
Nuno was a dick in the early 90's. I met him several times, before and after Pornograffitti. A lot of the "Nuno is the next Eddie" sh*t supposedly went to his head and he was hung up on himself. Not sure if much has changed. I heard this from several people in the industry back in the day, including people who worked for guitar magazines. I won't elaborate past that. Sure some people will say he's down to Earth, others will say he's stuck on himself, I've heard a lot of the latter and from what I personally witnessed I agree. Which is the shame because personally I don't think the Extreme material aged well and you heard most of what he had, chops wise, on Pornograffitti. He left it all on the table on that album. Great guitar player, he sold some records, he had a decent career, made a contribution, but there's no "next Eddie", he's not in the same universe as Ed, but who is?

Plus he's a midget. He didn't look 5' 8" to me like google has him listed as. He looked 5' 4" tops in person if he was lucky. I could have rested my drink on his head. I'm 6' 3".

Gary is a nice guy. You can BS with him about anything. He just didn't fit into VH.

My 2 favorite guitarists...Eddie and Jeff Beck. Cool story from Jennifer about how she finally met Jeff--saw her play with him on the "Who Else?" tour in '99.

It's interesting that Dweezil had her on and tried to make a connection between Jeff and Eddie. I've always wondered about that myself. The only true connection I've ever been able to make between the two and how they approach the guitar is that they both do so from outside the box. For me, that's a big link. They were originators. They both have their own unique musical identities on the guitar. You hear them play, you know it's them.
I know that Eddie idolized Clapton, but, to me, it would've made a little more sense if he was a fan of Beck instead. Beck just seemed more up Eddie's alley, making cool sounds with the guitar and not always playing the cleanest notes.

Very cool jam with Eddie playing the Stratocaster that Dweezil shared. I believe there was a video of that backstage jam on here somewhere. I would've loved to hear more of Eddie on a Strat.

Anyone know if there an episode where they played an alternate take of EVH's solo to "Hear About It Later"? Heard something about that maybe.

No, sorry, you just teed up the thread at the exact time they posted the newest episode on YouTube, so I threw it in here!

I do remember the Hear About it Later take, can't remember if they just discuss it or if Dweezil played it...

I love the way they explain “swing” and how unique Ed was in that he naturally had it....Along with Al and the role Michael Anthony played in order to keep it all rooted by being the foundation between Ed and Al....

I often times explain to non fans how Van Halen was unique in hard rock in that they not only “swing” but also about their three part harmonies. Both were unheard of in hard rock in the late 70’s. At least I was not aware of it anywhere in that genre back then and even at present.

Toss in some of Roth’s unique and catchy almost poetic lyrics along with his baritone voice and stage persona and you have one hell of a unique hard rock band.
"People say Cream gave birth to Heavy Metal," says Baker. "If that's so, we should have had an abortion."
