Default What Surprised You Most About Wolf's Music?

For me, it was three things:

    - I am super critical about tone; Wolf's guitar sounds clean and warm.

    - Wolfs' musicianship.

    - His voice; his singing floored me; he hit some Sammy like highs. Wolf's presence isn't conversational, as is the presence of most frontmen. But damn; I don't know why he never fronted Van Halen. I am seriously shocked at how well he can sing.

    ***

Wolf's greatest problem here on in, is that people are gonna start breaking his balls for new product - at least I will. His musical tastes aren't my genre, but his music is a welcome change from the garbage that's out there.

"Okay Wolf; you dropped the first album...when's the next release coming out?"
"So the legacy of a band who is one of the greatest of all time will be stunted because of spoiled man-baby and his deranged mommy." - Brook

"when I heard Me Wise Magic on I-81 in 1996...I am thinking "what a fucking waste of time the last ten years were for Van Halen." - Dave's Dreidel

"It wasn't Ed's playing that inspired me, it was his spirit. The playing was merely a manifestation of that spirit." - Speedway

Voice by a large margin. I knew everything else would be great, his playing his ability to craft a song. But his voice was the big unknown. I'm talking lead singer voice....not background vocal voice, HUGE difference between those. He started in on Distance and honestly I was like....."hoooly shit".

    Vocals.

I thought they would be good but he has a better voice than I originally imagined as a lead singer.

The vocals - not just his lead voice but the BG vox have some of the best ideas on the tracks we've heard so far.

And I hope we're mature enough to comment critically without getting all reactive - but I was surprised the drum sound wasn't that great and the drums seem mixed kinda low. But I can forgive an unbalanced mix, as when you're doing it all yourself, these things tend to get lost sometimes. Looks at some of Prince's work - that I love - same thing.

"Nice voice, Wolf" --Dave on Tokyo Dome (I think during "Women In Love").

Yeah, I thought he had a good voice when he did the background vox for VH and especially on a couple of those soundcheck vids where he was the only one singing a line or two. But I had no idea it would be this good.

    Very happy for him.

I agree that his voice sounds great. This isn't meant to be critical but the style of music seems exactly what a rock musician who is 30 years old would put out. I would have predicted his music would have more of a nod to the 70s and 80s.

First it was the vocals. I'll echo the sentiment that when he started singing in Distance I thought "whoa...he sounds legit." I knew from the little clips he posted the general feel for the genre so I kind of knew what to expect there, but given there was so little posted on the teasers it was hard to tell how good the melodies, hooks, and song structures were going to be. Basically I didn't know if he could write a decent song that I would want to listen to. I guess you could say I was a mix of surprised and relieved when I heard the two songs and realized that not only could he play like a beast, but he could write good songs and not get caught up in the desire to show off on every instrument all at once. He let the song breathe in places which allows it to soar when needed. That ability to shift the tone to tell a story goes a long way in a 3 or 4 minute song, and I was pleasantly surprised that he sounds like a mature song writer with this being just his first album.

I also really liked his guitar solo on You're to Blame. He showed not only some great chops but he made it sound musical and gave it that emotional ride.

To put it simply, I was surprised at how good it all was.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

I knew he was an incredible Bassist & Drummer, but i had no idea he could sing like that.

    He has serious pipes.

Musically, "Blame" is kind of what i expected, and i do love that track.
"Distance" surprised me a bit more.

The air bassing was spot on.

    Joke

like others the timbre of his voice. While I knew he could sing on pitch and did hear him sing lead on I'll Wait from a soundtrack, I didn't know how it would sound on tape. Production on the songs as well. The background vocals also impressed me. The counter melodies and stuff impressed me. Was more texture than a full on assault

I would say reception to Wolf's first song. I expected the progressive rock sound. But to have his first song rocket to the top of Itunes at the #1 spot is remarkable. And it's up there on top of the some of the current biggest names in the music industry.

This really illustrates the power of social media & the internet.

Two years back, us geezers were grumbling that "if the kid doesn't play clubs to
promote this, he'll sell ten copies."

Meanwhile, my sister is texting me about how great this new song is.

Last person i ever expected to hear this.

    Vocals were very good.

Unfortunately I don't think he's going to see any live touring until 2022 or later, who knows when. Second and third lockdowns are coming because of Covid-1984. It's a virtual world now. Enjoy your Netflix.
