Default Sunset Sound new studio interview with Doug Messenger on Van Halen and Eddie!

Producer and Van Morrison guitarist Doug Messenger has had a life in music which included Van Halen and being friends with Ed.

He sits down in Studio 2 at Sunset Sound to discuss his life and also the calls he made to the Warner Brothers office in 1977 urging them to check out this Guitar Hero named Eddie Van Halen.

He was at The Starwood the night the famous napkin contract took place and has 100 more stories. Enjoy!

Tangential to the above interview, Messenger references a guitar player named "Spider Taylor" twice, which he speaks very highly of. I never heard of him but I found a link.

Default Sunset Sound new studio interview with Doug Messenger on Van Halen and Eddie!

This guy says the tapped bridge of DTNA is totally out of tune and horrendous. I donít hear it.

If I played a song for somebody like a friend and they made a comment like that to me I would just think theyíre a dick. I would.

Eddie is all proud of a new song they just mixed and comes out to let this guy hear it, and this asshole makes a comment that itís totally out of tune. That just is a typical jealous musician dick move imo.

It wasnít a serious VH song so it didnít matter. Whatever the fuck that means schmuck.

Default Sunset Sound new studio interview with Doug Messenger on Van Halen and Eddie!

Also that story about Unchained and Ed recorded what he wanted when Ted wasnít there, was told in an interview by Ed many many years ago. So itís not exactly news. He was talking about how that was a tough time to be in the band, there was a lot of cocaine on the console, he wasnít getting along with any of the guys, and thatís the kind of stuff he had to do like recording by himself with Donn Landee to get stuff the way he wanted. So that is not a new revelation

Ed and Al weren't too fond of DTNA back when they recorded it. It wasn't heavy enough.

I have no doubt this guy has had an incredible life in music and so fourth. That part IN DTNA is probably the coolest part of that song and it is no way out of tune in any shape or form. I don't have perfect pitch but I have very good relative pitch and if it were out, it would drive me nuts. I also remember reading that Alex has perfect pitch. If it was really out, Alex would have jumped all over him.

This guy has all these odd stories yet he can't get the details right. He talks about being there for Unchained and eddie handing him the guitar and he can't remember if it's the black and white one or the red, black and white one. Frankie was only black and white for a short time. He also mentions that Anaheim stadium show and mentions J Geils Band. As far as I know, the only time VH was on a bill with them was the Pink Pop Festival in 1980. He also says that they parachuted into the US festival like they did at Anaheim. I'm sure he's not the rabid fan that some of us are but I think his memory is all over the place. It's clear that the two guys talking to him want to hear VH info but he keeps steering back to himself or goes off on some weird tangent. maybe I'm not hearing this stuff the right way but it almost feels like listening to a DLR interview where I just wish that the guy would stay on point.

Yeah he is another old guy who doesnít remember things exactly as they happened, and doesnít think some things are important to remember I guess. When youíve lived that kind of rock Ďní roll life Iím sure a lot of it is just a big blur. So I do understand that getting the minutiae right is hard for these guys, but it often seems like some of these people always put themselves into the stories weíve heard for years already, itís kind of strange. Of course he just happened to be there for all the big stories that have made the rounds over the years. How convenient. He mightíve been there for some of these things but I donít know. Everyone talks about how big of a friend they were with Eddie, but yet who knows the real truth. I donít get that this guy was ever very close no matter what he says. And then of course he had to point out that heís so above such mundane activities as watching TV and such an individual that he didnít even know who Valerie Bertinelli was. You didnít need to watch a lot of tv to know who she was. Guy is full of it. Heís certainly not as important as he thinks he is. Iím pretty sure my father never watched one episode of One Day At A Time but funny he knew exactly who Valerie Bertinelli was when she married Ed.

The best was when he said he was a better lead player than Ronnie Montrose. I mean who fucking says that but an asshole, whether itís true or not.

Not to mention him going on about his stupid Marshall that everyone had to record and play with apparently, and how he didnít think Edís was very loud like his, as if volume is some dick measuring contest. Sorry this guy just kind of rubbed me the wrong way.

I think it was more about the feel that it finished with. They expected it to sound more like a Fleetwood Mac song, and it would up having a very calypso feel which wasnít really what they were going for. Either way showing it to somebody and having them tell you that itís out of tune is a dick move.

Then to talk about it as some shitty throwaway pop track anyway was pathetic. Iíd like to know how many shitty throwaway hits like that song this old fart dying his hair has written?
