So this is how they're spinning the narrative:

Why did they let it into US airspace to begin with?

I don’t know. None of us do. A lot of information missing that few are privy to.

I gave my hypothesis earlier. We were going to let it go. We do that a lot. All the time really. We even had a treaty with many countries to do that. Even Russia! It’s actually a Republican idea that letting it go mutually promotes peace.

But then people saw it and photos were published. So there was pressure to do something. But at that point it was over land and mistakes could mean dragging it out for days and no control over where it lands. Water brings that risk nearer to zero.

If that isn’t what happened, it just doesn’t pass the smell test to me that the White House and Pentagon just fell into the fetal position for 3 days and sucked their thumb because no one knew what to do. I think options were weighed including the capabilities of the craft as well as the hit they’d take in the press over China panic. Hell, they chose, pretty quickly, to go public.

People seem very convinced everyone just shit themselves. I very much doubt that.

This possibly was occurring under Trump however current Pentagon officals do say they didn't know about it until Biden was ini office.
Pentagon also said early on this has happened before. However 1-4 years later, we didn't have a game plan for this. Failure with the Pentagon and our military complex.
Considering we have not done anything about this balloon or possibly previous ones our radar is ineffective against this type of device. We can't detect when this shit is 100 miles offshore floating in the Pacific. Would be nice to be ready to shoot down once it enters our space. However regardless if you are on Team Biden or Trump our military is powerless against this "weapon"
Since the Pentagon said our previous admin had no knowledge of this until after they left, this current admin doesn't give a shit about our soveirgn air space. They so were against it they were going to still go on sendding Blinken to China but when this story leaked they couldn't. They had egg on their face

Again sometimes you need to make hard calls. Letting a device live while over the 48th most populous state and not doing anything about it due to safety is a cop out. We were going to shoot down a freaking airline in PA on 9-11. People on teh ground be damned. Now obviously this was just a balloon but we had no freaking idea what was in this balloon. I mean we are living with this lovely COVID likely due to lab leak and yet you are going to let this ballooon meander across the continental United States not knowing what the hell is in it. Could have radioactive material in it. What happens if that crash landed in Charlotte?

Anyway this story like many others has the smell of rotten fish on a breakwall.

Who doesn’t know that nations spy on each other? If you raised your hand just check out of society already.

The point is not “they do this all the time” or “it happened under the other guy” “it didn’t happen under the other guy” or even “ok, it did, but after the other guy left and I have to protect my guy”.

It is what it is , a fucking embarrassment . They allowed it in at that altitude for all to see and then let it go on for a week. They had opportunities to shoot it down before it entered and they didn’t . They had opportunities to shoot it down over land with no civilian casualties around and they didn’t.


The psyche of this nation is damaged well beyond the Jimmy Carter years.

I am sure there is an argument where you can monitor it and gather intel on its capabilities better when it is over US soil.

I am sure we can argue ourselves into a knot discussing the pros and cons of when to shoot it down. But, the optics of it are not good.

Additionally, just fucking be honest with us. If someone from the DoD had simply had a news conference saying "we are aware and have been aware of a spy balloon belonging to the People's Republic of China over US air space. We are monitoring it and tracking its projected flight path, we are using our technology advantage to cancel its abilities to transmit data back to China, and once it is over the Atlantic Ocean we will shoot it down and take ownership of the remains for study."

Boom. Done.

The knee jerk reaction of the USG is "deny deny deny", when in many cases they could make things easier for themselves by getting in front of it.

I don't know who the "everyone shit themselves" comment refers to, be it the Pentagon, or be it US citizens.

I doubt that the Pentagon shit themselves, but if you're referring to civilians, Sheriffs in my area encouraged local residents not to shoot at the device; they were encouraged not to flood the 911 service with calls. I'm sure that people on the west coast were less concerned about the device.

Either way, as Brook had noted, the psyche of the average American is deranged. And if people are going to start arguing that "this happened three times under Trump's' watch, so he's worse," I dunno what to say.

I’m not saying spying is somehow a revelation. I’m saying we don’t know the daily ins and outs of it. We don’t make it a habit to publicly announce that we’re being spied on, by whom, and with what. It’s also not standard operating procedure to shoot them out of the sky.

So there are a lot of things that are remarkable about this situation. But letting a spy craft spy on us is, in fact, not remarkable.

What I mean by everyone shit themselves is there are a couple narratives being crafted here. One of them is that the White House and the Pentagon were frozen stiff without any clue what to do and I just don’t believe that is likely the case.

I just love how infallible the Pentagon is.

Maybe just maybe they should work on protecting our airspace witih additional sensors and such so slow moving balloons can't enter at their will. THat said probably too busy create some trans gender studies for the troops.
