You can either attack the "inflated" part, the actual hardware, or both.

Depends upon whether or not you want something leftover to look at. I thought because we waited for it to go over the Atlantic that we wanted it intact to look at and were going to just shoot it down in a way to keep as much of the tech as possible.

But then I read that the Chinese might get to it first...and I just get angry all over again.

I don't think it is any surprise it went over Montana and the plains states...gee, I wonder what we have there.

How would the Chinese get it first if it lands in or near US waters?

I did read earlier this week that Biden wanted it shot down but that he was warned that the debris field would be large, and dangerous to civilians on the ground because the device was carrying a large payload of unknown content.

Seems most prudent to shoot down something like this over an uninhabited area. Once it was shot down the debris field covered 7 square miles. Who knows what was in there,,,,biological weapons, dirty bombs ...could be anything

Now they're trying to recover it from the shallow waters that they shot it down in.

If China was stupid or brassy enough to house *any* sort of potential weapon in that thing and let it fly over the US under any circumstances, it would basically be as bad as "accidently" launching nukes at us. It will be interesting to see and hear what kind of equipment was actually onboard once we recover and analyze the debris. If it is spy tech, the US will want to flaunt that fact in the face of China as a blatant example of their increasing hostility. If it's anything other then spy tech, such as even mockup weaponry, I bet the details will get classified and buried especially to save the current administration from further embarrassment.

If you want to understand how China has handled US aircraft spy endeavors, read up on the Hainan Island incident from 2001 in which a Chinese fighter intercepted and collided with a US intelligence aircraft clearly in International waters destroying the Chinese fighter and killing the pilot and forcing the badly damaged US plane to land on a Chinese island resulting in China holding the crew for almost two weeks before the US "apologized." China held on to and disassembled the plane for study before we eventually got it back in pieces.

All the more reason it should have been shot down before it made its way over land. It's been reported that government was watching it before it made its way over U.S. land. What if it had some type of weapon/bomb and was released once it got over a heavily populated area?

Not sure it looks great that we didn’t know at the time. At the same time, hard to fault someone for shooting something down they didn’t know about.

Unless you just think both the Biden administration and the Pentagon are totally incompetent, there has to be a reason they let this thing fly across the US with China panic dominating the news for several days. We knew it posed no threat. Perhaps you can shoot it down over Montana. (Though, the Canadian weather balloon story 20+ years shows that if you pierce it wrong, it could hover and drift for several days before falling.)

There are some gaps in knowledge here—and common sense—that tell me that the administration/Pentagon felt the panic in the public sphere for several days was worth whatever the reasons where for this playing out as it did.
