Oddly enough, the first time Paul played Hey Jude for John Lennon, he (Paul)said that that particular line needed to be changed, but John loved it and that's why it stayed in the song.
That aside, I think your point is a good one. I remember once picking up one of Jim Morrisons' poetry books in a bookstore, and I found the poetry to be terrible. But inside of the Doors songs I think Jims' words are amazing.
Great post.

Awards:
I agree... if you go writing lyrics down, 90% of them do look silly.. Whoever wrote 'em.
Cant write things like timing and delivery down, and thats just as big an issue sometimes as whats being said

So many of us forget that the voice is just another instrument, not unlike the guitar, bass, drums, piano, etc...
If sung well the silliest of lyric takes on a wholely unique character.

I agree Hunted Into Hunter 100% on this.
And Glenn you are correct on the Beatles info regarding "Hey Jude"...I'm quite into The Beatles and own many books on them, plus all their albums...They are without a doubt my SECOND favorite band...

Not sure if you're aware of it, but Bretts' buddy Jerry runs an awesome Beatles site called BeatleLinks. You can get into it from the VHLinks main page. Highly recommended.
