His voice wasn't a fit, but even if it was...you can't be in VH if you're gonna cry over a satin jacket. Thicker skin needed.

If you come from nothing and you bust your ass and you finally have something that says to you that you've accomplished something, like a high school athlete getting their letterman's jacket, you value that. And I'm willing to bet you at that point in his career, given how recording artists contracts just rob them of any cash that is to be made that something tangible like that jacket was more than the money . I'm betting the Van Halen brothers had something that to them made the feel like they made it....like Eddies Jeep after driving that POS Peugeot. I think in Zlozower's book he said Eddie used to drop by and park the thing on his front lawn instead of in the street?

But as for Steve as a Van Halen frontman....I think Journey was the perfect band for him. makes you wonder tho how many other singers are going to come out of the wood work saying they thought at one time they were going to be the VH lead singer

Didn't Van Halen make a sign back in the early 80s that said something like, "Van Halen Headquarters: No Journey Fans!"

Great point of view, Daisy. I didn't think about that way. I'm sure they all have some trinkets from the early days they treasure. Crying understandable. LOL

I read the article and I also enjoyed it.

But I'm not a big fan of Journey. And I remember reading lots of GW with EVH saying some bad stuff against Journey during those 1978 concerts and still that band wanted them to keep the tour once Journey got more tickets sales than they could imagine back then. Another point is that EVH also said in an interview that after he got the phone call from Quincy Jones, he finally bought an answering machine so he could avoid talking to guys like Steve Perry who wanted him desperately to record 01 thing or 02 for his 1984 solo effort, Street Talk.

So, in a way I thank God EVH didn't record anything with Steve, including an album after Dave left the band in 1985.

I don't why some people would be surprised by this. EVH clearly said that before getting Sammy, they considered doing a record with multiple vocalists. He was probably considering Perry for a "Love Walks In" type of song. One song. He's wasn't stupid, he didn't think Steve Perry could pull off Panama or You Really Got Me live. Come on.
But after a few calls, I'm sure he realize how much work it would be to round up 10 singers for the record, and gave up on that idea.
