I thought this was a good article. Glad that Steve Perry shared that.

Good stuff from, Steve. He shoulda took him up on that. Woulda been fun.

His voice wasn't a fit, but even if it was...you can't be in VH if you're gonna cry over a satin jacket. Thicker skin needed.

Says he didn't cry but I wouldn't blame him. If you come from nothing and you bust your ass and you finally have something that says to you that you've accomplished something, like a high school athlete getting their letterman's jacket, you value that. And I'm willing to bet you at that point in his career, given how recording artists contracts just rob them of any cash that is to be made that something tangible like that jacket was more than the money . I'm betting the Van Halen brothers had something that to them made the feel like they made it....like Eddies Jeep after driving that POS Peugeot. I think in Zlozower's book he said Eddie used to drop by and park the thing on his front lawn instead of in the street?

But as for Steve as a Van Halen frontman....I think Journey was the perfect band for him. makes you wonder tho how many other singers are going to come out of the wood work saying they thought at one time they were going to be the VH lead singer

Well hasní it always been commented on that Van Halen turned into Journey after Roth left? Well looks like Ed was trying to make that happen

Makes me think what Dreams would've sounded like with Perry

Yeah, that was the first song that came to my mind. But then I think about something like Get Up. He probably would've passed on that song.

Steve's an incredible vocalist. But Sammy was the better fit for the band.

That was a great article. I think the way Steve describes the way tours were back in 1978 was particularly interesting. All of the little tidbits about how the opener had their PA system limited, the bands were all hyper competitive against each other, how great musical talents were still awed by VH (how's that on the Schonicity meter?), etc. were really cool to read. He's also spot on about how the liveliness of live music has been hurt by all of the technology these days. That's one of those things that you don't really realize you miss until it's pointed out. I guess the flip side is that you run the risk of getting a bad show more often without all of that tech, but it does rob you of the opportunity for those truly magical moments. What we get instead is risk-averse, consistent performances that leave audiences generally satisfied but rarely blown away. I wonder if people watching up and coming bands these days ever get truly blown away like concert goers used to?

It makes me think of that one VH show that's popped up on Youtube, I think it was VH in Greensboro in 1981, where I think Dave's mic didn't work or Mike's bass went out right at the opening of the concert. Rather than have an Ashley Simpson moment, the band plows through a jam while the technical issues get resolved. Then the band continues seamlessly into the beginning of the song and the fans are none the wiser. It just comes off as a complete badass opener.

Of course that immediately can be juxtaposed against Van Halen in Greensboro in 2007 with what was probably the weirdest issues they've ever had that I've seen, where they play along to the recording for Jump and the rest of the band is in a different key in one of the most uncomfortable 4 minutes your ears will ever have.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.
