The amount of sadness and joy that will be competing with each other in all of us if they release an album of new songs (from ADKOT sessions or whatever) will be mind-boggling.

I'm just grateful for what we have.
I was never a big fan of Wolf joining the band, but I realize how special it was for Ed and Wolf to play together. Given the way things are now, I guess that's fairly trivial in the overall scheme of things.
I'm genuinely happy for Wolf that he got to play on stage with his dad, that's something he will always cherish.
I do wish Mike had the opportunity for another go round, but it's comforting to know bridges were mended.
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

To answer the question posed, I am way more sympathetic now. I had a pretty bad attitude toward the band's wasted years but now that's water under the bridge. I'm satisfied with what we got and the joy I derive from the existing catalog. That's not to say I wouldn't love to have a bunch of demos released from the vaults.

I was never that bitter to begin with, so it's hard to call myself "more sympathetic" now. I was never one to feel like I was owed something from the band (although I certainly had waves of it like most people when it came to an all original reunion). For me, the explanation that Eddie just didn't want to write new music anymore and wasn't really inspired to write "Van Halen" music anymore was enough for me. I thought ADKOT was great, it scratched that itch. Would I have gladly taken more? Absolutely! But in some ways I was content knowing that if Ed wasn't happy with what he would potentially put out, that was more than enough for me. Considering the music that was produced after 1996, taken as a whole, I didn't have a ton of confidence we were going to get something that great--and that's including ADKOT, which again, I thought was great.

I'm sure the cancer diagnosis and substance abuse took its toll on Ed's drive to make new music for fans to consume, but even without that, maybe he just got bored with it and realized there wasn't much in it for him. He made his money, he was a living legend, there simply wasn't anything more to prove or accomplish.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.
