Does the death of EVH make you feel more sympathetic or less sympathetic to the fact that the band released one album in the last 20 years?

I'm not really sure how long he was really sick for, how long he has been covering it up, so there's certainly the side of me that thinks he just wasn't up to it, physically, mentally, emotionally, whatever.... he just couldn't do it. Hindsight being 20/20, we need to forgive that.

There's the other camp that this just pisses off even more. He squandered some good years when he was healthy (late 90's early to mid-2000's) where he could have released music but he didn't. For whatever reason, maybe he took it for granted that there'd always be time. I know he was disenchanted with how poorly received VH3 was, so there is that.

Anyway, just want to know what your feelings about this are, if it in any way impacts your feelings about what might have been.

I totally understand your sentiments and wish we would’ve gotten more properly recorded music from Eddie. But I don’t think there’s much sense in dissecting what should’ve been done in Ed’s life, especially when we‘ll never know all the details.

He already gave us more than most. It’s time to just enjoy that.

I'll always be selfishly frustrated that there wasn't more Van Halen music over the years. I thank Wolf for what he was able to spark with the band (3 tours, a new album + a live one) when we most likely wouldn't have gotten anything otherwise.

But we just lost the heartbeat of the band that we love. I agree with Jedi, no sense going over the missteps the band made over the years. We just need to focus on what we did get from him (them).

I don't think his cancer is the reason we had only one record. Steve Vai gave his opinion about this - I don't know if he heard it directly from Eddie. "Other things than music became more interesting in his life."
Al or Wolfie could probably speak to this a bit more.
Because we've heard from Azoff, Mike, Nuno that a tour was considered. And obviously a tour is MUCH more taxing on one's health than a studio record, but still, the tour was the priority over a new album. EVH could've worked one or two hours a day on a record at 5150, in between treatments. But there have been many tour rumors, and zero album rumors. It's because he clearly did not want to record another studio album. I hope the reason for this will emerge in due time.

Eddie was first diagnosed with cancer in 2000. We can't even begin to speculate how that limited him the last 20 years. Throw in a divorce, and a alcohol/drug addiction that he finally beat in 2008 on top of that. You just can't say for certain.

I haven’t thought about that at all. I’m just sad he’s gone and I’m thankful for all the music we DO have. Not what we don’t

We got we got and that's good enough for me and well more than many bands. VH wasn't destined to have a 30 album catalog.

Is this going to be the thread where Eddie has to be defended for "only" giving us 12 studio albums (which sold approximately 70 to 80 million copies), 2 live albums, a bunch of side projects, thousands of unforgettable live performances, and a highly respected musical instruments company, and was most importantly a great father? He faced a lot of challenges in his life these past 20 years--more than we'll ever know. Personally, I'd prefer not to know.

I'm eternally grateful for what he has given me. His life will be celebrated forever.

I was never as frustrated as some. I understood it to an extent. However, all things considered, I think we MAY have gotten a little more music had the band had more effective management. Friends and family are nice to have on the team. But, you needed that Ed Loeffler type of personality to mobilize the troops and say it's time to work. Or, at the very least to work to keep the band relevant through licensing music, etc. The last 8 years I'll say, "no". Nothing more could have been expected. But the first ten or twelve years? I still feel there was wasted time and opportunity for something.

I look at it this way. Most bands really only have a small window of intense creativity and output. VH had 12 studio albums and I rate all of them highly with the possible exception of VH3. Compare with ACDC. They are about to release their 18th studio album but they have been around for longer. They released their 5th album when VH1 was released (6 if you count two versions of High Voltage). I love ACDC and each album has a great song or 2 but arguably they only had 7 great albums out of those 18. The first 7. Look at Guns and Roses - very little output ever. 3 or 4 ripper albums and that's it. Led Zep is the band VH is compared to most in terms of greatness. 7 studio albums. Admittedly Bonzo's death stopped all that but I think they were done by the end of In Through the Out Door. Coda wasn't much chop IMO.

So 12 albums with 11 rippers amongst them is pretty good over a lifetime I think. The only real shame is that Eddie didn't step out more and do other projects while band line-ups changed behind the scenes. He could have done his multi-singer album like Slash and Santana did. Maybe that can still occur with the tapes in the vault. Wolf - if you're online, consider that down the track when the time is right given Eddie did want to do that at one time.

    Just some thoughts.

    Really isn't relevant any more.

Along with the Mark Stone v Wolfgang debates. It all seems rather petty. It always did, but now it really does.
