Question Looking for a good, mid-priced guitar with a Floyd. Suggestions?

    Howdy! First time posting here.

I’ve always dreamed of having a guitar equipped with a Floyd Rose, and after Eddie’s passing which lead to reacquainting myself with VH and Eddie’s amazing, groundbreaking style, I figured there’s not a better time than now to take the dive. I know the good and the bad that comes along with a Floyd (tuning, setup, stability, technique adjustment, etc.), as I’ve set up a few guitars with Floyds for friends over the years. Thing is I’ve never seriously looked into one for myself.

I’d like to get a Wolfgang Special Stealth, as they seem to get mostly favorable reviews and I’m really into the way it looks as well as some of the specifications of this particular guitar, but I had a few questions first...

Is this model worth the money? Have you owned or played one? The specs seem nice, but knowing nearly nothing about his guitars, I just want to make sure this one is decent. Or maybe there’s another model I should be looking at? Another brand altogether? I’d love to have an “Eddie”, but seeing that this would be my first FR equipped guitar, I just wanna make sure it’s a keeper. Should I buy parts and make EXACTLY what I want? I don’t play live anymore, just write and record in my home studio and maybe do a pedal/amp demo every now and again, so it doesn’t have to be the ‘best of the best’, I would just like to make sure it’d be solid with a thorough pro setup.

I’m also open to other brands; Ibanez, Charvel, Jackson, etc. Not really into anything super ‘modern metal’, extended range, or super pointy in general. I really like the look of the Wolfgang Stealth, and I also like the new EVH Striped Series, which we all know are a little more expensive.

Just looking for some general advice. I know I’ll never be an Eddie, but I sure would like to learn some licks from his expansive well as to develop my own style.

Also, should I go new? Be patient and go used? I’d really like to put my hands on the guitar I ultimately buy, but that may just not be possible this time around.

I’d also like to know... What was YOUR first FR equipped guitar? Were you happy with it? What would you have done differently, if anything. Also, what has been your absolute favorite? I want to hear your history with your favorite shredder!

Any constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated. I felt a little intimidated asking these questions after lurking the forum for a while, so please be gentle on me! 🙂

Also, be sure to crank your favorite VH album today!

    Thanks in advance!

    Get a Wolfgang Standard.

Lots of options and the quality control is pretty decent on them now.

I can't speak to the Wolfgangs, but Floyd Rose's are pretty solid and you shouldn't have much trouble with them. Floating tremolos are a bitch to tune and maintain in my opinion and not worth it if you are just looking to play licks like Ed, and having a mounted Floyd it only takes a minute or two to tune the thing up once you get the hang of it.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Hey there! Thanks for the reply. TBH, I am not sure what the differences are between a 'floating' and 'mounted' Floyd. Time to head back to YouTube!

    Thanks again.

Those look pretty promising, and the price isn't too bad. Thanks for the head's up!

Check out the Sterling by Music man guitars. The AX4 is a budget model with Indonesian copies of the EVH DiMarzio pickups, volume and tone knobs and a five way switch (similar to Super Sport) and a Floyd. The AX40 shares the same wiring as the axis (one volume and a 3-way switch) yet still has the Indonesian copy pickup. The AX40D is the same as the AX40 but features the coveted DiMarzio pickup set used in the Axis.

Don’t be afraid to buy used, though. Used Axis guitars can be found around the 1000 dollar mark, with Axis EX’s available for that price or even cheaper (literally the EVH axis guitar without the Signature on the headstock.

I’d recommend the AX40D and the Axis EX over a Wolfgang stealth. Better sound IMO and feels better for my hands.
There's a thin line between genius and insanity. I like to dance on it.

I like the Wolfgang Specials, never really vibed with the standards I play. Just slightly different spec and quality differences.

    Stealth's are cool.

Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of those Charvels or anything from the EVH line (maybe an EVH 5150, or a kramer if you want something in that vein).

Thanks for the tip! I’ll look into these.

As far as the Wolfgang Standards go, discovered this one and absolutely fell in love today. Wow. I know it’s not for everyone but I love the colors together, as well as the dark chrome hardware.

I just got one a few weeks ago and it didn't need much. I just modded things to make it work for me. Would be a great "out of the box" guitar and certainly the FR special is a FR. I've been using original Floyds since the late 80's. I've owned the EBMM and the PV Wolf and this Standard is very very good. I'm very happy with my purchase.

I've always liked Jacksons. Had a Japanese made DK2M years ago that played amazing. Still kicking myself for letting that one go.

I’d reeeeally like a Standard, especially the one I pictured above. Sold out across the board in that color. I understand why.

    I just gotta be patient.

I’d love a nice MiJ Jackson! Single Hum, Single Knob, Floyd, reverse headstock. Dream guitar right there!

    Or anything like these:
