I don’t like Clapton as a player and I really don’t care to see him have anything to do with Ed. I can’t remember him ever acknowledging Ed as a player or a person. So fuck him. He couldn’t play a Van Halen song if his life depended on it anyway.

I remember VH 1 did a Clapton special around 2000 and the interviewer was blowing smoke up his ass and asked if he ever hears other guitar players and thinks "wow, how does he do that". The interviewer expects Clapton to say no, cos he's clueless but, to be fair, Clapton said - "not so much in the early days but from Van Halen on, when they do the very fast lead work..." he went on to admit he wouldn't have a hope of playing it and the interviewer was shocked. Probably the biggest compliment he ever paid Ed.

Yeah I went back and watched it several times ( it's on youtube already) and didn't see anything odd, If any of you who thought you did could point it out. But I agree that there seemed to be something off for years with Roth. Hope we are all wrong tho.

I think they're talking about the couple small twitches at the 2:50 mark. Could be something could be nothing. Mike Anthony's had a tick since I can remember (head twitch). Could be just a tick that comes and goes with some people.

Al and DLR are very private, they don't owe us public comments, I am sure they both feel rudderless at this point and don't know what to say.

This 100% speculation on my part, and I've said this on here before for years, but this is just from my observation, no corroborating evidence, nothing, so take it for what it is, 100% bullshit.

i think DLR has some form of neurological disorder that impacts muscle control, and has for years. Which would impact control over your vocal chords and of course, your singing.

I believe the scares we saw on his head after he shaved his head was for deep impulse implants, and I think why Ed and Al didn't give him shit about his vocals was because they knew about it.

I don't know, man.

All that high caterwauling....that was by choice, IMO. He could have sung low anytime he wanted to.

He just DID that this year....he hit the stage with that same old 2015 awfulness during his first Vegas show. Took a ton of heat.

Then suddenly, just a few weeks later, he comes out of the KISS tour singing down low, just like a 65yo DLR should sound like, and we were all proud of him for finally changing.

And remember, Me Wise Magic....he sang most of that low, classic DLR, until the chorus and he went into the awful gargly high crap.
Plus, the interview a few years before that where he claimed to have "discovered a high note" that he never had before.

I won't say he doesn't have some issues NOW....he's older and there's been a lot of chemicals pumped through his system.
But the awful high singing IMO was totally by choice. Otherwise, why did it suddenly stop right after he became the butt of an internet full of jokes after his first couple of Vegas shows? Went right back to where it should have been all this time.

Check out the approx 5:05 mark. It's probably just an odd edit of Dave reacting to his own joke before the cut to the interviewer (who has some nutty facial expressions herself), but he looks kinda weird the way it's slotted into the clip.

I think DD's hypothesis that Dave may have a long standing minor neurological disorder has merit. I remember people pointing out a number of odd ticks especially in Dave's seeming lack of control of his right(?) arm/hand during those B/W interview segments around the ADKOT album, especially when he'd get excited about some topic. I noticed it during certain points, especially during his sit-down Stay Frosty/Ice Cream Man bit at the 2015 show I saw.

BTW, that interview, that's probably the grizzliest and most unkempt Dave's ever looked.

If he has some twitch or disorder affecting his muscluar control, he's doing some damn good, detail-focused fine art work with it.

Interesting theory. Also, I know it's a bit of a cliche, but smoking cigs for that long brings you all kinds of complications.

As an amateur medical expert, I think the neurological issue is a stretch at best. Smoking coupled with the range he sang at for so many years would wear down most peoples vocal chords. Who in history do we know who sang like Roth did for about 50 years and sounded remotely the same as time went on?

There’s is a reason Robert Plant turned his back on continuing on with Zep in favor of blue grass/Country. He can’t sing those songs in that range anymore than Roth can the VH songs. Difference is Roth doesn’t have an alternate gig and was born to be a showman more than a vocalist. His drug is performing.

Eddie and Alex very much commented on “this isn’t the Dave you remember” circa 1996ish. But they also recognized after the Cherone debacle that the songs they created with Dave would only be accepted by us with Dave signing them. They weren’t interested in pulling a Journey and finding a “sound alike.”
The crowds returned and so the Brothers accepted him for what he was and wasn’t able to do.
