I'm about to start building a project guitar. Where are the best places to order VH style bodies and necks?

I've had great success with the combination of Locke body, Musikraft neck and Pariah pickups. Locke's temporarily not taking orders right now as the shop is in extreme backlog. KNE is another source for bodies that I hear good things about.

Plus one. Especially with Mitch at KNE Guitars.

I can vouch for KNE guitars. The body for my Frank was perfect and just as I ordered it.

Iíve said many times all my homemade guitars are KNE bodies and necks. I canít say enough good things about Mitch. Iím lucky that his shop is very close to me and I have kind of established a relationship with him where I go to his shop and pick up bodies when I need them and so forth. So I am obviously a little biased, but he does amazing work.

Obviously Iím never going to purchase my stuff from anyone else. His bodies might not be 100% absolutely dead on perfect to a Van Halen body, but they are really freaking close. Nobody is going to sit and look at the specs of your guitar except some crazy Van Halen nut. And I donít see why it has to be identical to the smallest detail anyway. Youíre not Ed and itís never going to be his guitar.

What body wood do you guys prefer? My Franky is northern ash, and it's so darn heavy. I'd like something lighter, but that still has decent tone.

I usually go with alder or poplar. What the original guitars were means little to me. I worry about my own comfort.

What body style is the Unchained/Circles guitar? Is it a standard Charvel style?

I forget which one but one of them is pretty thick. Thicker than normal.

Those northern ash bodies are heavy. I couldn't believe how much heavier my Frank was compared to my other guitars. I have a Squier that feels like a feather now when I pick it up after playing the Franky.

At first it took some getting used to, but then I've learned to actually enjoy the fact that it weighs a ton. I'm not gigging with it or anything, so for the 20 or 30 minutes I get to play every now and then it's not going to mess up my back. Plus, it feels like I'm Tony Montana when I put the guitar over my shoulder and get ready to play.

CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Another recommendation for Musikraft necks. Their selection is spectacular, sporting many wood types (even reclaimed Ipe from the Coney Island boardwalk) and a ton of profiles. Easy to work with and easy to customise. Roasted option is really nice too. I believe the current wait time is around 12 weeks.
There's a thin line between genius and insanity. I like to dance on it.

"If you want to be a rock star or just be famous, then run down the street naked, you'll make the news or something. But if you want music to be your livelihood, then play, play, play and play! And eventually you'll get to where you want to be." RIP EVH

Echoing the fact that northern ash is heavy af. Swamp ash is light as a feather, but brighter. Basswood has been EVH's go to wood since the EBMM, light easy to seal for finishes.

With the changes of production with Locke body, who makes a close 5150 body?
