What a daunting task for the family. It’s not like going through clothes or some jewelry. A mountain of music. Interesting to see if anything gets released.

The second Gary album though I did recall reading most of it was recorded in an interview.

It's basically an unreleased Van Halen studio album, it should get released by itself.

ADKOT will always be Van Halen's last real studio album though.

I think though the unreleased Gary/VH record it's the quickest option to get some new unheard Van Halen material out for now.

Assuming though they are not just demos and it's a ready to go studio album.

Only Gary, Alex, Mike and Wolfie know if there is a ready to go album.
Absolutely no point in releasing inferior material which is what the Cherone era was.
The family has to decide what to do, but I don't understand the thinking in this thread.
It seems to have turned into a Hagar love fest over here.
The Hagar era was not as productive. Hagar's work ethic was one of the reasons it all fell apart.
They did three new Hagar songs on Best of Both Worlds and they were some of the worst crap Van Halen ever did.

When they got together and put out a very good studio album ADKOT they got shit on for going back and reworking and finally finishing some tracks like Big River(Big Trouble).
Instead people want to hear the inferior Big Trouble. It's all online go listen to it there.

It won't sound much better in any official release.

I'm torn in this area. There are a good bunch of people that would raid 5150 with pitchforks if that album were released by itself. I think the Cherone haters are overreactive. Gary did the best to bridge the Sam and Dave gap, (particularly live) plus carve out his own piece of the legacy. I have to give him a TON of credit in this area. While III is not VHs greatest album, I liked it. However, it's different enough that I don't think I'd want to mix the eras and in that respect it should be released by itself. Perhaps the best answer would be to include it in a box set as a separate disc.

you guys are nuts...I will gladly listen to what ever the family chooses to put out and be thrilled that we get to hear more of Ed. I'd love a box set with unreleased stuff (including all of the Gene Simmons demos), remasters of the Hagar era as well as any unreleased Hagar and Gary stuff. Call it inferior if you want...but I want to hear anything I can get my greedy hands on from Ed and if done correctly with great artwork and pictures...it would be something any VH diehard would gladly welcome.

It’s going to be a profoundly bittersweet and difficult task for them to go through. I’m not sure anything is gonna happen soon. I know that it was a year after my mother passed that we all got together to go through her things and it was tough. A lot of laughter, tears and a whole new wave of grief. Ultimately cathartic, but gut wrenching.

I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

1 - There is tons of material regardless of quality & the era

B - Some of it morphed through the years into other eras & songs

3 - Not 100% of fans will be happy no matter what is put out because of the divisiveness of eras among aspects of the fanbase

D - I don't give two flying figs about it overall right now because I feel its disrespectful to Ed's family; let them heal and do what they want to when they're comfortable with whatever it is they wind up doing; if anything. Death effects every person differently and people need to be respectful of that.

316 - Let Wolf heal and pursue his own career because that's what Ed would have wanted

I always thought ADKOT should have been a double-album given the big gap of time since their last release. Plus, I'm a little greedy when it comes to VH music. It was cool they gave us 13 songs, though.

No doubt there a bunch of releasable stuff, but that’s part of the enigma of VH the last 20 years. All this supposed material, but nothing ever actually gets put out. I’m sure some of the second Cherone record was repurposed for ADKOT and the ‘04 stuff. But even so, I’d love to hear it in its original form. I wouldn’t hold my breath for anything. I’d love to be wrong though...

Isn't it confirmed the three 2004 Hagar songs were directly from the second Cherone record with completely reworked lyrics and vocal melodies by Sammy and MA?

Its possible, but I never read anything like that. All throughout his career, I'm sure Eddie had truck loads of songs in various stages of completion.

I remember reading an interview an with Steve Lukather where he said something like, "Eddie is has a great album on his hands, all he needs is someone to sing on it." This was like a year or two after they parted ways with Gary. Van Halen had gone completely silent and there was absolutely no information coming out.

In order of what I would like to hear, provided it all exists:

    1) Sammy demos (i.e. numb to the touch, etc.)
    2) 2001 Dave album
    3) Cherone follow up

It doesn’t matter to me and I’m not sure why it would matter to the Van Halen family if these songs had been reworked later for BOBW or ADKOT.

I honestly think the biggest issue with releasing anything will be if there is any singing on it. That's when you have to talk to Sammy, Mike, Dave and Gary. I know its a love fest now and hopefully that would be the case. However they need to be compensated for anything that features them.

Considering that a lot of their problems involved money, well I wouldn't be surprised if money doesn't come up when this stuff is moving forward. Not ripping on anybody but as I think Dave or Eddie said before, once lawyers get involved, it turns bad

Man I hope Closer To You gets put out. The song was confirmed to have been recorded as Fairbairn's version, not sure if Ballard's Between Us Two got finalised, I know there was a lot of infighting occurring at that point.

Supposedly Eddie Trunk has heard all or part of the Cherone follow up too...

I'm curious if anyone knows how far along the work with Dave in 2001-'02 got before it fell apart. I remember Mitch Malloy said that he told Ed to get back with Dave in around '02 and Ed got pissed and hung up.

Uggh. Something I wasn't thinking about but very true.
