By chance, I got talking to someone last week who has been a reporter for the Enquirer, People, US Weekly etc.
The subject of Ed's passing came up and they said that they hadn't spoken to Ed in years but that the Enquirer put a bounty on Ed's head during '02-'04 payable to anyone who could get him to talk.
She said she just got his number, called it and he picked up. Ed flirted with her a lot and long story short, she got a full on the record conversation with him which led to a meeting.
She chose not to tell the enquirer about it and collect the money.
Reason? (and reason for posting) is that even she, an 'extremely cynical hack' (her words) could not believe how bad shape he was in. She said that the drug addiction had completely got hold of him.
She said it felt cruel to expose him in that condition and that VH fans should be very grateful for 07-15 as it's nothing short of a full on miracle (in her opinion) that he didn't pass away in '04.

No matter how he was in 2002-2004, we got 16 more years of awesomeness from him. The world was just a better place. Kinda like trusty icbm’s in Wyoming, you never see them but you know they’re there and you feel somehow safe.
