Wow, for me the "Unchained" live vid wias like the holy grail.

Just the power of the band on that stage, the reaction of the crowd.
Ed firing off all those licks at the end, completely at the peak of his powers....

"Jump!" for me, was when everyone got onboard.
All the Prep kids in my school bought 1984, because it was popular.

Before that, VH felt more exclusive, even though they were still big.

    Completely agree.

For me, MY VH was actually the first five records, because that period just holds this
    certain untouchable magic to me.

I know Diver had multiple covers, but those original tunes retained that "thing."
    I just love that period.

1984 is a great album & a smart movie, to broaden the base.
But previous to that, they had a certain appeal to a certain demographic of folks.

    Sacred?

You mean “ connected with God (or the gods) or dedicated to a religious purpose and so deserving veneration!”

For for record I wasn’t rehashing a Sam v Dave...but criticizing the band. I’ve never gotten into a Sam v Dave argument or discussion. It’s cool if you like it, but it’s also cool if I don’t. Sometimes I’m gonna share that opinion.

Sorry it got you worked up enough to fell the need to post.

    Anyway...

yes, that Jump video with Eddie just grinning away will always be a memorable image of the man. Probably the best representation of how the world knew him.

Lately, though, when I think of him I think his unequaled stage presence in many of the old boot videos I've seen. Those old vids from the late 70's of him and the rest of the band just taking over the world.

cleaning up the garage in preparation for a move, and I found a copy of "Hit Parader" dated February 1985 - no idea why I have it as I wasn't any kind of magazine collector - probably the person who delivered magazines to the motel i worked at left it as a "sample". Anyway, found this article (the subtitle is kind of misleading!)

    VH 1.jpg

    VH 3.jpg

I found the last two columns to be particularly interesting in light again with what we now know would happen two months later - not sure when the interview was conducted.

Ironically, the same magazine has lyrics for "I Can't Drive 55" a few pages later!

    Just listened to Distance again.
I couldn't stand to listen to it but once before...puts tears in my eyes.
The lyrics are for the ages...
Makes me think of my Mom. I really miss her....
"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

“A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government.”
