Yeah it’s on the Food Network app.

Actually the stuff she made on that episode looks really good.

I think he is one of those few lucky people in which his dad was his best friend.

My dad and I didn't get along too well, and I still miss him. Can't imagine what it would be like if you really enjoyed spending time with him.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

I am fortunate to have an awesome dad who has always been a great role model and was always there to spend time with me when I was young and living at home. He will be 86 in September, so I cherish every opportunity I get to see him or speak with him on the phone.

Exact same relationship with my father. We are clearly in the minority. Can’t imagine the pain most deal with not having that hero to look up to.

My dad wasn't a "hero". He was just a man but the little time I remember him... made an impact.

Made us go to Mass every Sunday. Went to work every day. Came home and did it all again each day.

That's all I remember. No one on one time. No bonding. No great memories just a solid quiet handle your business man.

I think most people in your age bracket could say the same about their Fathers, honestly. Respect and love but not friendship.

They were immune to reacting to superficial, “meaningless” problems. Or problems that didn’t match what they went through. They just kept their head down, and kept moving. The “strong, silent types”.

I know my Dad loves to tell me how much my Grandfather, his Dad, has changed in old age. He turned 95 last year.

My Dad calls him a pussy whenever he interacts with me and says to me, “Youre lucky you never saw him when he was in his late 30’s, early 40’s. He was fuckin’ scary. Very intimidating.”

I imagine going through severe poverty, a World War at 17 and never taking a sick day in life can do that to somebody.

I miss my dad every day. He’s been gone barely a year I haven’t gotten over it one bit. Not even a little. His friends miss him everyday and my mom is a mess a lot of the time but she doesn’t tell me. My daughter misses her papa. My dad’s old secretaries even call my mom all the time checking in on her, they loved my dad. Everyone has had a hard time accepting that he’s still not here. That tells you the kind of man I had as a father. And yeah he was my hero. Everyone loved my dad, he was a crack up. Enjoy your dads if you still have them and you have a great relationship like I did. I didn’t expect to lose him at 77. I didn’t get long enough. If he had lived to 100 I still wouldn’t have gotten long enough.

Mitch, your granddad was my dad.

Depression/WW2 generation guys were just a different breed. Tough men with very high expectations of their sons.

I come from good stock of tough hard working men. Unfortunately I only got a part of it. My dad missed two days of work in his life. One to remove a tumor in his back which should have been 5 days and the other to bury my grandmother. His dad worked 60 hour weeks for 5 years to pay off his house. My mom's dad wanted a basement for his house. Didn't have one so he dug one out by hand.

Anyway as much as the younger generations complain about the Great Recession and now COVID just imagine if you were born lets say 1900. You are old enough to remember quite vividly the first world war. You may have served. Then after that you get the Spanish Flu which makes COVID look like a sinus infection. Then the Great Depression. Then WW2. Then you live through the scariest moments of the Cold War.

No wonder why they were tough

Yeah, my dad was a hard man to live with. The irony was that the people he worked with loved him, and I once did a summer internship at his employer, and I got to see first hand how fucking nice he was to everyone.

So I one day plucked up the courage to ask "why are so nice to everyone at work and not nice at home?" His response was "I expect more from my family".

    Ok.

I've said it before, what my dad considered tough parenting is child abuse today, but I forgave him all that shit a long time ago, and he mellowed in his old age as he became a grandpa.

I can remember always saying to myself "when I am older, I am going to kick his ass", and by the time I was old enough to kick his ass, I didn't care anymore.

Default Edward Van Halen Has Passed Away

I was a shitty son. I said it. I took a lot for granted, thought he was super man, didn’t think anything could ever take him down, and was so much like him that we never really got along until I was old enough to see my errors.

And then when I started to see it, he died. I said what I needed to say before he passed which is eventually what I would’ve gotten to, but it doesn’t change anything. Because of me, I didn’t have an adult relationship with my dad.

The money, the inheritance, the feeling of parenting alone, the questions I can’t ask, I’d give everything to have my dad back.

So there’s a lesson, if you have a dad, tell him how much he means. Don’t wait for a Hallmark holiday to say something. Do it as much as you can, because take it from someone who tortured themselves for years because of this, they deserve to hear it. And you never know when one day they won’t be here and you can’t. And it takes 8 or 9 years to be able to write this.

    I tortured myself. For years.

And don’t ever think that your father doesn’t want to hear that you love them. I don’t care if your dad fought the entire veit cong army barehanded. They want to hear it. All of them.
