Which Sammy Performance Best Plays Off Of EVH's Guitar?
Let me elaborate on the title:
I am new to guitar, and I recently put an SD Custom Custom pickup in my Strat. On the CC, if you strike the string from a certain angle, the note sounds like a "wiseass." It's tough to explain, but anyone who's familiar with the CC knows what I am talking about...
The first six albums had grit; in Ed's playing, sans a few exceptions, there was always a bit of a "wiseass" element present. Roth's vocal approach perfectly complimented Ed's grit/wiseass signature, which is one of the reasons why I favor Roth.
Hagar's approach is completely different, which is understandable, of course. But which one of Sam's vocal performances perfectly plays off of EVH's grit/wise ass?
I vote for Poundcake. The other day, I listened to the song, and heard something new: as the song builds up to the chorus, Sammy mirrors Ed's guitar:
"Lemme get on, lemme get on, lemme get on some of that
Shake it up, bake it up nice, uh
Lemme get on, lemme get on, lemme get on all that"
Sam's voice sounds almost threatening, as EVH builds up to the chorus; the two elements play off one another in a way that I don't always hear in Sam Halen.
(Almost 30 years later, and I am still picking up minor cues from Van Halen's music. And EVH still doesn't understand why we are clamoring for a new album. I don't think he'll ever understand it from our perspective)

(I hope this thread doesn't turn into a shitstorm; we have absolutely nothing to discuss, band wise, although I am not giving up hope until I see what Wolf does with his album release/tour)Last edited by NDL; 10.04.20 at 05:26 PM.

Love your choice. Poundcake is such a badass tune. I think Black and Blue is another, as well as Judgment Day and Best of Both Worlds.

BOBW for me hands down. I'm not gonna get technical because I'm not technical about these things. It's just my favorite song of that era.

Nah, just making a joke--or at least attempting to. Are you not familiar with Henley's song Dirty Laundry? Thought it was a nice tie-in to the story.
Valerie Bertinelli told Wolfie not...
