This also shows...and the Ed-heads won't like this.....that aside from his stock licks Ed really doesn't know what else to play in a jam situation. You can see him starting a stock lick that we've all heard before and he stops because he realizes it won't work where his hand is positioned. He jut adjusts his stock licks for where the beat is going.
I'm not putting too much stock in to this 'noodling around' as proof he's lost in a jam situation.

Having said that, I will admit to seeing Ed overthink some 'jam' moments on stage. A good representation of that was that VH1 garage band show with other celebrities. He didn't seem comfortable in that situation. This video appears to be from the early 90's, a time when Ed seemed to be in a 'rut' with his playing, IMO. I'm not a guitar player, but having followed his career all along, to my ears this was a time where he was the least inspired. From 78 to about 88 he could've jammed to just about anything. He didn't seem to think about it, he just played what came naturally and it was sensational.

I got a kick out of that video where he was like a little kid making cool noises with the whammy bar. I can imagine him having a similar reaction when he came up with so many of his tricks when he was younger.

I always loved the sound of a strat...must have something to do with Jeff Beck.

I would agree, although I thought this video was pretty great and it wasn't just Ed doing a bunch of his same tired old licks the whole time.

It was cool but would have been a lot cooler hearing him on a strat in 1981

Hear About It Later was recorded on a Strat.
