Agree - I’ve never seen a picture of an 800 among his backline and I’ve never known him to mention them in any interviews. But FWIW, I have heard a few folks dial in an 800 to near perfect early VH tones. The original 800s were pretty tight and uncompressed with really nice ‘woody’ low-mids. A subtle front end boost provides a great foundation for signature effects - verb, delay, phase, flange - to really ‘sell’ the early sounds.
