Ed is 65 years old and hasnít had a really strong desire to record in a long time. I think the odds thatís going to change a he gets even older is remote unfortunately.

Hell, most of those seeds had hatched long before the first record. So, it does make sense from a business perspective that the brothers (and Dave) would have wanted to change the split. But, the politics of it could have been handled better. I don't know that anybody would argue that it wasn't reasonable of the others to want that. Given what we know from Mike, Sam and Noel Monk, what irks people I think is the utter disrespect shown Mike in how it was dealt with. The passive aggression of it. Not even the professional courtesy of a grown-up sit down to explain their position and why they felt the split was inequitable given how much more responsibility they carried musically. Had that happened, I think there wouldn't be the acrimony that there is. Had he just been shown the respect as a member of the band instead of treated like shit.
Well to play devils advocate...Mike wasn't chomping at the bit either to say you know what? I don't deserve an equal share 'cos I'm not a writer. He coulda been compensated to make up for it in other ways since he was the work horse The standard bearer. Fan-friendly etc. More cut of merch as an example or whatever. He bled too. Thats if everybody was cool but no. They were dicks.

Ed now goes through extended periods of time when he doesn't even pick up a guitar. Maybe one last ride touring with Wolf opening once COVID is over, to help his kid out, is about the best we can hope for.

And why would that be? That's what we all want to know, after hearing for decades that he'd be a lifer with this. Last year, Phil Collins, visibly in physical pain, was sitting on stage, singing, during his solo tour. Freddie Mercury, dying of AIDS, recorded Queen's Innuendo, a damn fine record. Johnny Cash worked until the end.

Why has EVH, out of all ppl, decided to take his ball and go home? It's literally one of life's greatest mystery!

Not to me. He wants to relax and enjoy the rest of his life. If he no longer wants to or enjoys creating music that is fine.

My Dad loved teaching but after he was able to retire he did. He is happy living his life doing whatever he wants.

    Ed's no different.

Maybe, but we don't know that for a fact. He didn't state this. Furthermore, he's been developing his EVH Inc. business. Maybe he's also involved in various charities - we don't know.

He's been semi-retired for twenty years.

Couple tour to boost his bank account. An album of old tunes.

Let me be clear, by saying "we don't know," it doesn't mean "how dare he." He can do whatever he wants, obviously. His current behavior is surprising in light of past statements he made repeatedly. People can change. But since he hasn't explained the "change," I don't think it's wrong to call the current situation a "mystery."

I bet Eddie still plays for his own enjoyment. Maybe not every day, maybe not every week, but he probably still plays. He's said his whole entire life--a million times--that he'll play music until he dies. He never said he would record and release new music until he dies.

I wouldn't expect Ed and co. to ever tour again but who knows. I'm just hoping they take everything from the vault and release it in some fashion

This. I'm sure both he and Al still play when they get the itch. But I believe they've soured on the business aspects of making music, and they're blessed enough that they can afford to not have to deal with the business on any sort of regular basis anymore.

As others have said, Van Halen are essentially retired. If Eddie could or WANTED to be releasing new music, he would be. I know back in the early 90s he commented that he went over a year without touching a guitar. I imagine today he may go even longer without even thinking about a guitar. Age, health, and changes in the business re-focus priorities. Other things take the fore. Makes complete sense that they'd retire. The fact that the band haven't ever formally stated that, I think fuels the frustration fans feel because for whatever reason, they still think that productivity is an option. It's not. And, privacy is anyone's right. Ed's energy needs to go into his health, not touring. I think we all get that. But, at least say, "Yeah. We're done." That's all. Enjoy your sunset and God bless.

I really have a hard time believing Ed goes a year or more without picking up a guitar. I believe when he said he went a year without playing was 89 to 90 after the end of the OU812 tour and start of the FUCK sessions. I dont recall him ever stating another time when he wasn't playing guitar, except when he had surgery on his hand.

As amazing as he is, I dont think his playing wouldve kept getting progressively better on each of the last three tours without him doing some woodshedding. And he still has been keeping fairly busy with new gear and products in recent years. I dont know, he may have lost all desire to release new music or tour, but he's still a gear head and tinkerer and unless he or someone in his circle says otherwise, I'm figuring he still plays for himself just as most of us here play for ourselves.

I seem to recall Ed not picking up a guitar for a long time. Wasn't it that "laid on the couch watching Law & Order" or am I tripping?

Ed an Al are boomers. Boomers with money and younger women. That usually equals retirement in todays world. Eds cancer tounge has spread to his throat. They paid their dues and owe us nothing.
