Lip synched or not, another piece of VH history I've never seen before.

Whoever the hell "My Collection" is......keep it up. And please bring me the lone performance of 5150 on the Balance tour if you're reading this.

I still don't understand why VH went all over Europe in 1981 playing a bunch of these lip sync shows, but didn't actually tour playing live shows.

The same reason Elvis never toured Europe/Japan etc. Stupidity. Think about that . Elvis fucking Presley never ventured out of the USA tour wise. He didn't have to. He sold out regardless but it's unprecedented for that caliber of a superstar.

It's really about short term vs. long term. They didn't need to go to Europe to make a quick buck. But all the bands that ended up bigger than VH, U2, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, Metallica, etc. toured the whole world and not just America. In the long run, touring globally paid off.
Also another factor was that in the 80s, Warner Brothers Europe never took to Van Halen. They had a high priority with Madonna and never really "got" VH - I heard that from ppl inside the label back in the day.

Yeah! Another nice find from this guy/girl, My Collection! Many thanks for sharing it here, man!

It's funny - I own one of these books from the band (from Metal Mania, I guess) with some similar pics from this TV presentation and a few others while the band went to Europe to promote Fair Warning. But this is the 1st time I see this video as well.

That wasn't the point. Point is, before 1981 VH had already successfully toured Europe a couple times and the FW tour was one of the biggest North American tours of 1981. It was still an odd miscalculation on the part of Warner Bros not to have them tour Europe that year. But, then again, as alluded to by LD, WB never truly understood what they had in VH, which is probably why say an amazing tune like IASR is not a classic rock radio staple today. And to say there were no "potential" hit singles on FW in 1981, which is why no singles were chosen for that album, is complete idiocy. Especially when Rock was such a dominant force at that time.

Oh well, there is about a thousand what ifs we could play with the history of Van Halen...

In 1981, WB was making much more pure profit selling vinyl and cassettes than they were doing (massive overhead) VH live shows.

The shows were almost loss-leaders from the Labels POV...

Those European TV shows were just to push sales of VH's product at that time...

Just a small amt of travel expenses to get the band over to those TV studios was well worth it

Funny that the TV host pronounces "Van Halen" in a really strange way. It's neither the French way, the American way or the Dutch way. I guess she decided to get creative.

Well, I wouldn't have expected the massive FW stage set to go to Europe. And that still doesn't explain WB not even attempting to release singles from FW. Something has never passed the smell test about FW being such a "poor" performer sales wise, especially in light of how popular the tour was.

And it was still shortsighted to not have VH actually TOUR the world more than they did. Other bands of the time did it, and as has been discussed many times on here, those bands have far surpassed VH in global popularity. Its a shame, because VH could've EASILY been just as global as Metallica, AC/DC, U2 etc. NOBODY will ever be able to convince me otherwise.
