I don't think Ed sees music as therapy for his soul. A need. Not the way we need it. He can create it at will and toss it in the bin at will.

I think part of Ed's goal and dream was to be the best, with all the practicing and effort in his youth. He reached the peak of that mountain and in the 90s started to see what it's like to possibly start going down the other side, and so he prefers not to continue.

You can summarize Van Halen's activity level to this.

If Ed is health and wants to do it, it gets done. If he doesn't want to do it, it simply won't happen. Based upon interviews that came out after the album release, it was a minor miracle that ADKOT made it to pressing, and that was over eight years ago. It took a lot of convincing to get Ed to go out for the summer tour in 2015, and that was five years ago.

He doesn't like it when people say it, but he's semi-retired, at best. He likes to say he's "on a break", but he's obviously pretty much done with rock and roll recording and touring. He's a gear guy now, and God bless him for it, he gets to do what he wants, and not what he has to.
All ADKOT recorded at Henson. Edward did re-record some and wanted to re-mix it as he did not like it. The original horse trade was do it at Dave's studio Henson but Ed insisted separate times to record. The biggest issue for Ed was spending money on studio time when he had a studio for free but territorial pissing's and all.
Ed went to Dave w the ADKOT mix and Dave agreed it blew so it was re-mixed at 5150.
2013 horse trade try it at 5150 but all together as Dave wanted. Eventually Dave had to go to Japan and came back Ed changed his mind enjoyed hanging listening to Wolf noodle etc... so do a club daze but Ed did not like it, eventually settled on Tokyo. Dave tried to drag em by doing John 5 material in a few days at Henson, but Ed decided too much work to do a full cycle.

Ed tends to reflect his issues onto others. Dave was too controlling, Sam was lazy, Dave did not want to do new music etc.... funny how 1 guy has a completed record in days and the other guy claimed in the infamous I taught MA to play interview that he had no idea where Dave lived. He literally was having weekly calls together when he said that and the tour was agreed to. So I'm sure Ed said a lot to people but does not make it so. And someone relaying what he heard from that side is not "wrong" or full of it. VH is like a blind guy with his hands on an elephant. Depending what part his view of what an elephant is can be very different. Same goes for any POV including mine. Likely truth is ADKOT so be kind to each other folks.

Does anyone else remember in the post-ADKOT era Dave saying in the press that he wanted to write new material *with Eddie... vis-à-vis ...but that Eddied didn't want to work that way... or something to that effect.

That is how I remember any hold up to any studio recordings. They couldn't agree on work flow protocol.
Which in effect held up any recording dates.

I wish I could remember where I read that. Anyone?

    Cheers

If the final mix was an improvement, I’d hate to hear the first one...

VH should own the masters for the first 3 records at this point.

I think the quote was something like "I haven't written a song with Ed in 25 years, and yeah, that's a disappointment."
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

If the story is that he didn't want to write the music, that's different than not showing up to record them. And if someone else wrote his melodies, than this is a completely different story.

But as stated, the story does not make much sense.
Pretty sure Dave would show up to any time that Ed called w/ new material and a firm timeline for release - and wouldn't care if the music sucked. This is a guy who did the DLR BBQ thing; he has taken a pass on QC a few times in his career.
