While I don't hate the front cover, its definitely not a favorite. But the back cover, while an interesting concept, suffered from very poor execution. Its as if the band was trying to look like a cross between Hall And Oates and Air Supply.

Not a good look, and certainly a far cry from the badass kings they had been up to that point. To be fair, the straight jacket photo on the inside was cool and more "Halen-like."

Cue some Sam guy accusing me of hating the band...

Totally agree. The straightjacket photo was great--could've been used somewhere on the cover.

But the back-cover photo of the boys was not a good moment.

I love the 5150 cover. It's one of their best, in my opinion.

I like the cover. The back on the other hand, no. Maybe if the guys came out of the sphere in stray jackets (similar to Jungle Drummer's comment) looking completey crazy flipped out might have worked better.

Well, they certainly had no problem looking cool from 78-84. They quit being leaders and started following the trends, in more ways than one. Oh well.

There’s nothing wrong with the cover the back just looks kind of weird though. It’s like they just stuck a random picture of them there near the broken sphere. It should’ve been more like them coming out of it or something. Weird.

Wasn't Alex usually in charge of the Album covers? Atlas holding up the airbrushed chrome sphere is very 80s. The should've gone with the straight jackets for the main cover. It shows the whole band with the new guy, and the straight jackets tie in with the 5150 police code. For me, easily their best was the 1984 cover.

Hell, I'll go ahead and rank the studio album covers.

In my 10th grade geometry class, we had a project to draw an album cover on graph paper and they write the formula for each line, shape. I did 5150 cover - I wish I still had that project.

I never thought it was that bad, it's a product of the mid 80's and I've always looked at it that way.
