This came accross my feed last night and it's awesome.

Ed's like a kid in a candy store playing with this bunch. I see a genuine joy in Ed here, like he's absorbed in the moment and truly enjoying the experience.

Oh yeah, and he absolutely shreds these tunes.

I remember that airing on VH1...appropriately enough...and recording it on VHS.

He only played on 6 tracks? I remember he'd play and leave and then come back. But I thought he was on more than 6 tracks.

Wasn't this the gig where John Mellencamp reportedly told Ed not to do so much of his tapping? I thought I read that once... ??

Funny you say that 'cause I was thinking while watching it that John was probably cringing at Ed's solos and overbearing tones.

Outside the context of Van Halen, Ed's soloing seems to be from a similar template. It usually sounds like a variation of the "Beat It" solo which is where he pretty much demonstrated every trick from his bag. He tends to stand out more so than being a part of the group onstage. Didn't Roth once say that Ed plays the same solo on every song?

He has/had lots of licks, and here he only has about 3 with a couple variations. His soloing here is pretty weak. Maybe he didn't want to be there or was uncomfortable around the other musicians. Richie Sambora of all people played better solos at this gig. Must have been a lack of confidence.

Yeah, John wanted him to play with more feel & for the song.

I never understood why he couldn't summon the Ed from WACF, where he was playing
    bluesier and less "auto pilot."

But Ed hit that period, post 1984, maybe '88, where he basically did variations
of the same solo, over & over.
These are my tricks, gonna play all of 'em...

Then you listen to something like Fools or DOA, Whiskey, Girl Gone Bad, HFT, So this is love...
and he's just an ace improvisor.

I have said for years that the Eddie simply got lazy on guitar after 1984. His technique went downhill. He brought that part of it back for Balance and VH3 but even then it was so saturated with overdrive, he wasn't the same player. I also think that to improve as a guitarist, you have to try to emulate other guitarists or listen to them. He certainly did that back in the club days and his love of Holdsworth was key from FW to 84. Then he stopped. Listen to Starfleet and this. He spent so much time being Eddie Van Halen, he simply forgot how to simply be a guitarist. Its kind of like Al Pacino. Dude is or was a great actor. Then suddenly he started yelling in his films and now he simply does that in everything. Its still acting but sometimes it doesn't fit.

Anyway this is still cool to watch. I never seen the full clip.

Thanks for posting. I had thought that Jon Bon Jovi and EVH did a song together. Was I wrong about that?
