I don't think they've done anything together. JBJ wasn't on this show.

As I recall, Ed and Ritchie Sambora traded solos on one song. Pretty cool. Respectable solo by Ritchie, then Ed floors em. You can hear the crowd erupt as he finishes.

Did Ed offer Mellencamp the job after Sammy left? Don’t buy the story otherwise.

I think Ed's "Guitar Hero" days, peaked with FW & 1984.

Having said that, i really enjoy his playing and solo's on 5150 and OU812.

But post OU812, he became like Steven Tyler: The Geffen Years.
Meaning, both were very self aware of "that thing they do," and it became
like, An evening with Steven Tyler doing Steven Tyler.

Join us, as Edward Van Halen pays tribute to Edward Van Halen.

I really missed the Steven from Live! Bootleg!
    And the Eddie from 78-88.

    Mellencamp DID say that.

I remember him mentioning it in an interview from that time.
I don't think he was a fan of Ed's busy style.

It was like in People, or something stupid like that.

    From Blabbermouth:

EDDIE VAN HALEN Was In Talks With JOHN MELLENCAMP About Doing Acoustic Tour
    April 15, 2005

MelodicRock.com is reporting that Eddie Van Halen apparently nearly joined up for an acoustic tour with John Mellencamp four years ago.

In a recent interview with The News-Sentinel, Mellencamp said the following on the subject of a possible acoustic tour:

"Eddie Van Halen and I talked about it four years ago. He would play acoustic guitar and I would sing. We talked about it for three months. I went to MTV in the mid-'80s, and they'll verify the story, and said, I want to do a concert in acoustic guitars. A couple years later they came up with acoustic — or unplugged.

    That was me, my idea."

Would have been a weird union, as i don't picture Ed as the acoustic/Americana type.

But i like both guys as artists, of course.

They could have a cool stage rap, where Ed pulls out a plain, white Kramer Baretta:

Ed: Hey John, i love this guitar, but it looks kinda plain....what should i do?

John: Ed....you gotta....PAINT THE MUTHA PINK!

I remember a Guitar World interview Eddie did to promote Balance. He said he'd been approached several times to do Unplugged for MTV. Eddie was like, "Hey if I wanted to play those songs with acoustic guitars, I would've written them that way. I'm not an unplugged guy."

As for the All-Star Band thing, I watched and recorded it when it originally aired. I thought Eddie was wildly out of place. He rarely plays outside of Van Halen and it showed. His playing is so different, that it sticks out over everything. Its possible that he was nervous. His tone sounded strange--maybe this was during his love affair with the sustainer. Sambora actually played a couple of solos that I thought sounded better. The only tune I thought Eddie sounded good on was The Rolling Stones song Bitch. That song has a strong riff which is one of Eddie's strengths. Sheryl Crow's singing was terrible though. I can't stand her singing in general though. She's tone deaf in my opinion.

The thing with Eddie is that everyone expects a masterpiece every time he picks up a guitar. That is usually the case, but not this time.
