The cause of the explosion is still not known, but some reports suggest it may have been an accident. Lebanon's National News Agency reported a fire breaking out at what it called an explosives depot at the port before the explosion.

This is a comparable (night time) explosion in China in a building illegally storing dangerous chemicals in a populated urban area from 2015 that is equally jaw-dropping.

“Highly explosive materials,” seized by the government years ago, were stored where the explosions occurred, said Maj. Gen. Abbas Ibrahim, the head of Lebanon’s general security service, according to the National News Agency.

They aren’t ruling out terrorism, but it seems if it were, they likely knew what was there and utilized it.

The first clip (first 15 seconds) in the video I linked of this explosion earlier in this thread is from some guy who was live streaming the fire several blocks away. When the building exploded, he was literally vaporized in the blast, his body and phone/camera were never recovered.
