Poptopia! The Official Power Pop Thread
This thread is dedicated to the oft-maligned genre known as power pop.
What is power pop? To me, it’s melodic chord progressions, jangly (sometimes distorted) guitars, great vocal melodies with harmonies, and killer hooks that could land a boatload of steelhead with. The arrangements are not complex, and the lyrics are often happy-sounding-yet-heartbreaking…a singer might be yearning for a girl that will never notice him or love him.
Some bands are 100% power pop. Some bands skirt the boundaries of it. Some bands have a few songs that fit into this genre, but they aren’t of of this genre. Some bands have only one song that fits into this genre.

I don’t consider these guys to be a power pop band, but like Black Sabbath did with metal, they started the genre with some of their songs. Here’s my choice as the prototypical power pop song:
