People need to realize that Eddie is one of those guys who says a lot of things to a lot of people because he gets excited. I know its popular to think here when he said X, he truly truly truly meant it at the time. He had thought it out for months, created power point presentations to show the band, calculated ROI, and pitched it to WB. Fact is he has a history of being impulsive with musicians and I think gets excited. He has done with other musicians too. Allan Holdsworth and Pete Townsend come to mind. Probably is just drunk off his ass, having a good time and comes up with an idea of doing a project or join the band.

Glad it didn't happen but I doubt it would have happened. If WB had an issue with the name with Sammy, they sure in hell would have had one with Patty

It’s been argued here before that as far as his guitar playing goes, his innovation and Fire was gone.

I do think Ed focused less on pushing the envelope with his guitar playing and more on different styles of songs.

1984 was kinda the last great guitar extravaganza (Those solo's, man...), though i've had
friends claim his GUITAR GOD years were strictly the first four albums.
And i can understand some looking at his peak being FW.

But with 5150, there was definitely a conscious shift to explore more melodic songwriting,
and less of the guitar hero thing.
He had already rewritten the book by '81, and by '84 EVERYONE knew who Eddie was
    and what he did.

5150 started the trend where he was feeding off the old stock licks he had created, early on,
    the Eddie-isms.
His head seemed to be more in the song.

I'm not sure I agree with you. 1984's format was very similar to 5150's. There was one instrumental, but it was a keyboard tune. Both had fast songs and slow songs, 5150 (the song) had an extended guitar solo in the middle. The only "guitar-y" thing that 1984 had and 5150 didn't have was the fade-out guitar solo at the end of Drop Dead Legs. If 5150 came after Diver Down, which had 2 guitar instrumentals, then maybe one could've said "they went commercial," where are the guitar instrumentals?
5150 arriving after 1984 was no "death of the guitar" like some want to believe. That's rewriting history. The big keyboard shift was 1984, with Dave at the helm. Not 5150, which was merely following the already established pattern.

The production or lack thereof was what stands out on the next 2 albums after 1984.

The solos on 1984 were much more experimental and stand out more individually than those on 5150. Pretty sure that's what Jape was talking about, and a lot of other people in the past, have talked about.
