Yes it is. Almost sounds like the sludgy Grunge Rock from Seattle in the 1990’s. VH beat them to it back in 1974.

I noticed this old thread in the older threads listings underneath the new thread and decided to post it twice in case some of the VH fans miss it. Maybe the threads can be combined by the mods.

There’s an old original VH song “I Can Hardly Wait” which I’ve never heard before. As well as full live versions of Glitter & Gentlemen Of Leisure.

This is an amazing slice of VH history.

I waited to comment on this until I had a decent listen to it. I am totally floored by this show! So many cool things to take in with this one show and I am forever thankful to whoever the person was that recorded this, even if the quality isn't the greatest. I'm seriously thankful for it in any quality. It's a historic show as well since Mike's band Snake was the opener and this is the show where Mike loaned VH his PA as theirs was on the fritz. My immediate reaction is that Alex and Edward sound unbelievable especially considering they are 19 and 21 here. I had always heard that Outta Love Again was written well before VH II but it is played here and I have never heard a version of it prior to VH II. Alex does a drum solo right after and it is absolutely jaw dropping. Mike must have been at the side of the stage in awe watching these guys.

There are of course no hammer-ons and false harmonic taps from Edward but his playing is just raw and totally soulful. They do a slow blues that is absolutely killer. This must have been not long after the name change to VH happened and I can also see how Dave likely had to work his way into getting the guys to play more danceable stuff. This sounds pretty much like a prog rock show to me and while I love it and it's great to hear them play this way, Dave was right in the end by getting them to play more danceable covers. You really can say that Dave brought Alex and Edward to the people. I also find it interesting how Alex has said in interviews that Dave was a horrible singer for the most part. Now I have been pretty vocal about Dave's bad vocals in the much later years but I think he sounds incredible here. His voice is amazing and I love how he sang that blues tune. he was the total package back in those days.

Mark Stone also deserves some credit too as he was right there with every change. I am so happy that VH ended up with Mike as he was the perfect missing ingredient, but Mark was no slouch either and he did a great job with the band. It's absolutely mind blowing how much those guys changed and pushed forward in just three years when they recorded the first album. Edward jumped leaps and bounds with his playing. He went from a really good blues rock player to a guy that changed guitar forever and it sounds to me like most of those changes happened between 1974-1977. I also heard a few places where Edward did the Jimmy Page technique where he puts his right hand behind the left to bend strings. Edward has claimed many times that he figured out tapping by seeing Zeppelin in 1971. It almost sounds more and more to me that the story in VH rising with Harvey Mandell is where that came about. I find it odd that Edward figured out this technique in 1971, yet you don't actually hear him do any of it until at least 1977. Nonetheless this was an amazing show to listen to.

I have been listening to this for the last few days and I'm still just blown away by it. The blues they do, 3 O'clock in the morning is just incredible. Edward has always talked about being brought up on the blues but mostly every time I have heard Edward play the blues, he does a lot of his signature things like tapping and stuff like that. I know he played more traditional blues like the stuff on the Starfleet Project but this is different. This is Edward before he really created his signature sound and it's him cranking a Les Paul through a Marshall. It is just an incredible blues solo with tons of feel. I know Eric Clapton has pretty much been a douche in regards to Edwards blues playing but this clearly shows that had Edward been satisfied to stop pushing forward from this moment, he would have been one hell of a blues guitar player. Thankfully he pushed his talents into the guy we all know and love. My point is that Clapton can go screw himself. Plus Edward was 19 here! Wtf??

Alex too is just amazing. Alex has said that he did not really get his rudiments and stuff down until around the second album but his playing in this show is incredible. I especially love hearing Alex play a slow blues like this. has a feel like Bonham, does some of the bass drum triplets and he has a great buzz roll. I love how they bring the dynamics up and down.

Dave is awesome too. The blues was definitely in his wheelhouse. I find it funny how Alex has said time and time again that could not sing for shit. They auditioned him several times and it was terrible. This show can't be more than a few years at best since his audition and he is killing it. I have played with singers before with bad pitch and it's almost impossible to change that if they don't have the ear. Dave clearly knew pitch pretty well and his growl and power in this tune is just awesome.

As much as I love Mike, Mark is pretty damn good in this show. This was right before he was fired too and he sounds great. Some of the changes in these songs were rather tricky and he is right there with all of it. Granted I am happy with how history played out but Mark definitely deserves some credit as being a great bass player. I wish I could get this audio cleaned up even more. I think an amazing historical piece of the VH puzzle. I'm surprised more people have not commented on this.

I too was blown away by the Three O Clock Blues. It’s the one & only song I already had a few years ago from the same uploader who now recently uploaded the full show. I played the living hell out of it for months. At home with the home stereo and I put it in my phone & IPad too. It is amazing. All things considered since it was 1974 & they were so young. Who would’ve thought they’d even know that BB King tune back then. They were extremely mature & supremely well educated in the whole music stratosphere. Clearly they all must’ve had great full record collections back then.

As you stated all four of them Edward, David , Alex, & Mark Stone were all truly spectacular performing this song. I agree it’s definitely an amazing historical piece of the VH puzzle. There is no other example of them performing live like in this particular BB King Three O Clock Blues tune. It is magnificent.

Right Now it’s the Summer Of Sam. Fans are jazzed up about this current tour & the recent reissue box sets. Sam & Mike are not on this old original VH show from 1974.

VH fans always comment about wanting to hear something they’ve never heard from VH before and this show is jam packed with new old previously unheard stuff. So you know what can you say. Sometime later on maybe next year it’ll be posted again & people might notice & appreciate it then who knows or cares either way. I’m just glad I found out about it & pleased to see you did it too.

You guys nailed it. Its not the best quality but its a cool snapshot into the early years of this band. Definitely a different type of band than the one a year later or so.

Thank you for posting this comment. I really do think it's an amazing piece of the puzzle linking Edward's formative years with the Edward we all love from 1978 and beyond. I have heard for years how Edward was a blues guy and while I have always felt that he had a great bluesy feel to his playing, I never actually heard him play raw blues like this anywhere. I know lots of musicians cut their teeth on the blues and it's one of those genres of music where guys can get up and jam without ever playing together before. Lots of guys play the blues but a lot of people also play uninspiring blues. I have heard Edward jam blues numerous times over the years but it was was never anything like this 3'Oclock blues tune. This just completely blew me away. The other stuff is damn impressive too but this tune really got to me.

I know I can be hard on Dave as his voice has been not so great for a number of years but I just think he is killing it here. If Alex thinks Dave was terrible the several times they auditioned him in the early 70's then he must have made some major improvements in a short time to be able to sing with this much confidence and emotion. This band never ceases to amaze me. No other band has ever done that to me.
