Default Ticket Sales: Sam vs Dave

This is gonna piss some people off, and I know there will be dissenting opinions, but...

Sammy's latest comments started a firestorm, and while Sam sometimes says too much, he's not stupid; regarding his latest comments, where there's smoke, there's fire.

It's always been my opinion - which I know will be greatly debated - that the Sammy era material - as much as it's appreciated by all of us - the Sammy era material also has it's appeal with fair weather fans. I always saw the Roth era material appealing more to diehards, and while 1984 was a commercial success, the album was released at a time when Hard Rock was in it's prime.

    So...what am I driving at?

Dave era concerts would most certainly pack out with diehard fans, but I wonder if the Sam era material would do the same. Why? Because, although the Sam era partly consists of diehards, I see a lot of Sam era fans as being fair weather fans; Sammy knows how to write commercially popular, upbeat, material. Try playing House Of Pain or Girl Gone Bad for a fair weather Sammy fan; he ain't buying. Conversely, a Dave era fan might embrace Ed's music in a tune like Amsterdam, and ignore the lyrics.

If Van Halen tours with Sammy again, I wonder how many (former) Sam era fans would be willing to support a tour?

Which singer would pack out more stadiums, Dave or Sam?
Our hearts' are with you Wolf, Al, and Janie; blessings upon you all.

"It wasn't Ed's playing that inspired me, it was his spirit. The playing was merely a manifestation of that spirit." - Speedway

As a Dave era fan I can say I don't support "wham bam Amsterdam". LOL

    Neither are selling out stadiums.

I'd support it. Any tour would probably be the last. I'd appreciate a better set list, though.

Hey a Sam Vs. Dave thread! Love it!

They need both guys to sell out arenas. It's that or Dave with Mike not selling out places. Those are the only two options I see, assuming there is an option at all.

At the end of the day I'm a Van Halen fan. While I like the Dave era stuff more I love the music Ed writes and the thunder Al brings. I don't care if James Taylor is their singer. I'll be there.
I used to jog but the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass.

Van Halen still is a brand.
Just look at ADKOT sales without any real PR behind it.

But if you want to sell out stadiums, you need really good PR. And today, I think the only PR that you can get casual fans back into stadiums is promoting it as a tour with both Sam and Dave. You won't fill a stadium with die-hards leaning toward one or the other. You need the broad masses that remember hearing Jump, Why Can't This Be Love, etc. to buy tix for a chance-in-a-lifetime double-headliner.
