I felt bad spraying over some of that flame, but it is what it is.

At this point I almost have everything ready to go except for starting completely over on the body.

Sanded the original take down once, resprayed white, taped and re-sprayed red. I think I put the red on too fast and furious - it dried with a really odd sandy/grainy texture that could literally crumble off the guitar. So I spent two hours sanding that thing back down again yesterday.

While I wait for more sanding sealer and paint to arrive I can work on the neck. Sealed it yesterday and sprayed white this morning. Will tape for red tonight and spray it tomorrow. After that Iíll spray black, install tuners, age the fretboard and then oil/wax the exposed parts of the neck.

Other than that everything else is ready to go. Pickup is transferred to the aged and bent baseplate. New space tape ordered (to replace the first round I ripped up in the relicing process), and all hardware is in. If weather cooperates I may be able to wrap this up soon. Iím just bummed because if my first pass at the body had met my liking Iíd be done with the guitar in a matter of days. But like KS said - Iíll be happier with the end product when all is said and done.

How long did you wait to put the tape on? I mean I usually wait 24 hours with Duplicolor.

Dude I understand being happy with something. Thatís the reason I got rid of my first 5150 and just built a whole new great one. I knew that first one wasnít good enough after all these years, and it really bugged me.

I usually wait two full days just to be safe.

Will be like 36 hours for the headstock though.

That should be more than enough time. Thereís something weird going on with that paint. You know I noticed I pulled off a little bit of silver on the headstock around the edges even though I waited 24 hours. Thatís the one thing, that paint is really delicate and thin. At least I find it to be that.

Itís not a big deal to touch up, no one will even notice unless they pull out a magnifying glass. But thatís one thing that has happened to me.

    I'm curious.

Is there a how to anywhere for these guitar kits and stuff?

Like step by step using musikraft bodies and necks? For those of us not in the know on doing this stuff?
Like, just the basics of installing the hardware properly, simple paint jobs, etc. Like, here's exactly how you install the floyd. Here's exactly how you install the nut. Here's exactly how you sand. Here's exactly how you paint. Here's exactly how you seal.

Cuz I'd be interested in doing more of an homage type guitar. Same stripe patterns, but my own color choices.

That would be a cool, useful thread.

There are lots of videos on YouTube of guys painting EVH guitars. Try checking out a few, a lot of them do step by step. But no matter how much walking through you do, you just simply need to dive in at some point and try it. Taking the plunge is really the best way to learn to do this. Youíre bound to make mistakes the first time out. It does take a little bit to get the hang of it, but you can certainly get it right the first time, you just have to be meticulous about it. Just remember that the guitars Ed built and painted were hardly perfect.

Iíve built about 8 of these things and I still screwed up yesterday and forgot to ground the bridge, because Iím not used to building guitars without a trem. I had to take all the strings off, I had to pull the tailpiece bushing out. It was a bitch but it had to be done. Guitar wasnít grounded properly and had a terrible hum. After I fixed it...perfect.

We could start a thread like that but all of us have different ways of doing this, so youíre going to get a lot of different comments on processes and so forth. I know most guys do sealer, primer, pre-sanding, a lot of prep before they ever touch paint. And all I ever do is throw paint on the body after using a tack cloth, and my guitars turn out fine. Iím sure most would never do it like that. Itís all a matter of what works best for you. I also live in a part of the country where weather is never an issue. My main guitar was painted 10 years ago with Krylon paint and I beat the shit out of it, and it still has paint on it. And I never used primer or anything like that.

    What the bossman said.

When I first started I practiced by just taking my starter guitar completely apart, painting it, and putting it back together. That taught me a lot. Then I just had to dive in. Googled questions when I had them, bugged el_jalepeno on here with PM's of questions (anybody else remember him?), and learned as I went.

My biggest piece of advice is to make sure you understand what neck specs you enjoy. The neck is a significant cost of a guitar build, and screwing up your neck order is a major blow to the budget and/or your satisfaction with the end product.

Absolutely on the neck. Thatís why I donít use anyone else, because once I found someone who can make it exactly like I like it, I have no reason to change.
