Mike said he heard that the brothers "were going to try to plan a thing for this (2019) summer" but that the "plug got pulled".

No way is Azoff is making calls like that before presenting them to Ed. Mike even said The Circle planned a break in early 2019 around his joining VH. Ed was behind it.

I believe Ed getting sick derailed everything, plus Dave got back surgery (maybe once it was delayed a year). So in late 2019 Dave is healed up, and he re-appears in the media, and announces he is going to see Ed. Ed is also healed up, but no longer ready to pick up where they left off a year ago. He doesn't answer the bell. So Dave went to Vegas and now here we are.
It fits a new pattern regarding reunions: Ed doesn't make the first call, he has someone else do it. 2004, apparently it went through Al who connected with Sam. 2007, Ed had Wolfie call Dave. And 2018, it went through managers. Ed don't call no more.

I think Sam wants to do it because he has become the RJD of Van Halen, instead of the Brian Johnson.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Sam has always had everything he wanted in life for years. He gets his way. Let it go Sam. Make peace with 2004. Own your part in that. That was it. No do-overs. All your money and clout can't buy it.

    It isn't.
I think Ed hates touring. Certainly doesn't seem to be good for him emotionally or good for his health. Granted touring NOW is not like the grueling touring of the 80's or 90's. But it's still a slog. A lot of crap to go thru for a few hours of doing what you love to do. And I don't think something like a Vegas residency is the thing for them either. Sure Billy Joel has had success with his Garden shows, but I don't think Van Halen is that kind of act. It seems like with both Roth and Hagar he got tied to a singer whose appetite for touring not just domestically but world wide is much much higher than his.

And Ed's been thru some shit. That changes how you think about how you want to spend your days.

Traveling is highly overrated. I absolutely love being in Maui and I absolutely hate getting there.

I’m with you on that one. I’ve had long discussions over the years about The Beatles with friends because I never really got it. What made them so special? My brother loves them - most people do - but whereas I ‘get’ the impact Elvis has, Led Zeppelin too, and I know they’re both rooted in black music, I don’t hear the before-and-after with the Fab Four. I’ve always been interested in music history, although I’m not musical myself, and I think I need a musician or a music historian to explain it to me.

You’ve made me think. I wonder whether there’d be the same possessive sense of ‘ownership’ if they’d stuck with, say, Mammoth? I don’t think so. Precisely by calling it ‘Van Halen’ has pretty much given the bros. the title deeds to the band. What was it Dave once called it - “a hellafied brand name”? It’s so obviously associated with the bros. that no-one would consider it WASN’T their name. And imagine if Dave or Mike ever took it court for legal rights to the name ? Come on!

Ed was one of the two main creative forces in the band but by suggesting they adopt the name ‘Van Halen’, Dave essentially gave long term control to the bros., though you could argue he’d never know the long term impact this would have.
