Default The New York Fucking Blows Thread

My mother is from Huntington, Long Island, so we still have family around the area. We used to visit once in a while when I was young, but I havenít seen any of them in many years. And since my mom is the baby, I would assume most of them are dead by now anyway lol. I know my mom keeps in touch with a few people, but many of them have moved. Some of them have moved to Florida, some moved down to Maryland.

New York CityÖeh. Iím fine visiting it for a couple days, but thatís about it. Itís just not a lifestyle that I could ever get used to. And Iím from a huge city, but itís just different.

Of course I enjoy seeing all the touristy shit, and they do have great food, but it ainít a world for me. Iíve also been there a lot, so I donít need to go anymore. Lol.

The difference in people being from LA versus New York is just unbelievably different. Plus they talk funny. My mom has been in California since 1953, so whatís that like 70 years, and she still pronounces the word orange like Are-inge. I know thatís not just a New York thing, but itís at least at East Coast thing in places. Thereís a couple others that she still has never lost that accent. Just a couple though.

My mother was Irish her people settled in and around Luray VA. During the depression her father left and moved to Jersey right across river from NYC for work. At her funeral about 5-6 people showed up from VA who I never met and identified themselves as relatives notified by my mother's brother. Family reunion at a funeral . Sad

One of my aunts pronounced it like that, my cousin still does. Born and raised in the Midwest.

My dad's side of the family adds an r in those and many other words where they do not belong. And talks like this...

“Interstate Farty-Far” (St. Louis English)-It’s easy to prematurely assume that certain rare American dialect features have become extinct. Such is the case with St. Louis‘ “Interstate Farty-Far” quirk, whereby words like “for” and “born ” are pronounced more or less as “far” and “barn” would be in most other American accents.

I just thought of the other word that my mother still has her New York accent for. The word horror. She pronounces it har-ah. There might be a couple others I just canít remember. Oh yeah, now I remember another one. Florida. Thatís a big one. She says Flah-rida.

People from California always say they donít have an accent, but I know that we do. I think our accent is the fact that we pronounce every single syllable of a word. Like I bet a lot of you say crayon like cran. I know thatís pretty common. And we say cray-yon.

Brett, have you ever dropped by Coney Island? If so, what were your impressions of it?

I don't get the appeal of Coney Island, I was like "ok, can we go somewhere cool now?"
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Exactly when I think of Coney Island, I think of the Warriors.

Of course, my mother went to Coney Island a lot when she was little so she remembers it. We got a Nathanís restaurant here in the early 80s. Place did really well for a while, then died really fast.

But my parents always bought Nathanís hotdogs in the market.
