    Default Newbie recording question

Hey guys, a quick question regarding direct recording from a 5150III combo.

If I record from the fx send in to my interface, do I need to connect something to the fx return? I have a headphone jack plugged into the headphones out, so the speaker is muted anyway, I just want to double check Iím not going to cause any damage before I try this! Iíve already recorded using the preamp out, I just want to experiment with the fx send out as an alternative.

    Thanks :-)

    I wouldn’t think so
The return is the signal with the external effects applied
If you don’t have a line out then I would think it should work
I am not sure what the difference between that and preamp out would be in the signal chain
There should be documentation out there somewhere that explains it in detail

You def d9 not have to have return connected I would be more worried about the equipment you are recording with and what is the best signal for it

No you should be fine as long as the speaker is off. I donít think though that using the effects return is the best signal for a line out.

Ok, so I made a loop, fed it in to the amp, and recorded it using preamp out, then with the fx send, and finally with the headphones out.

Headphones out, unsurprisingly, was the worst sound. Even when I added an IR to it - which it shouldn’t need as it already has a cab sim applied - it wasn’t great.

I applied IR’s to both the preamp out and fx send versions, and to my ears they sounded identical.

So, experiment concluded, I will continue to use the preamp out as the easiest option.

In most amps they are the same
Pre out may be buffered as it is intended to record usually

Fix loops are more about the return
They may be in series or parallel in the signal chain

Do yourself a favor and get a mesaboogie cab clone if you're going to try to record without mics. Otherwise use the preamp out and any type of cabinet modeler you can find.

Does anyone on here ever use a mic recording of their guitar instead of line in, just for a change in tone?
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

I do prefer to do that, but it’s just not practical with having a 9 month old baby in the house! Silent recording makes things a lot easier, but at the expense of a bit of quality in the sound.

I used to use a 57 & a beta 57 on two different cabs, great sound - but different living space - I'm not going to mic it unless I can actually play at a volume worth mic'ing. (Which I can't currently)

I'm 99% sure they're the same. The preamp out just allows the FX loop to continue to function as well. I've done this recording experiment too and wasn't thrilled with the results. You need an attenuator with a DI out to then hit with an IR in your DAW.

Most of the stuff I post here is recorded with a single SM57. Sometimes I record direct into Logic using a Fender amp sim set super clean with pedals for gain. The MXR 5150 OD is actually fantastic for this - better than using it in front of a real amp.

I played with a guitar player once that flat out refused to record line in. Too "solid state" I can remember him saying.

Line in is so much easier, I find myself being lazy and simply doing it all the time.
