Default MIM Wolfgang Special - A Belated Appreciation Thread

I, as many of you, have been in full social-distancing mode for almost two months now, and one good thing to come out of it has been that I've finally come around on my Wolfgang Special. I've owned the guitar for over four years, but for much of that time, it's been a love-hate relationship. It didn't come properly finished (had to have the fret ends filed down, for starters), but more to the point, it's not been my favorite guitar to play. My longtime #1 is my 1988 Westone Spectrum, and that guitar has one of the best necks I've ever held - it's thin and wide, like a more comfortable Ibanez Wizard neck. It's got a EVH Frankenstein humbucker in it, and after having the guitar fully reworked (new frets, new pots, etc), it's a dream to play. I bought my Wolfgang in 2016, certain I would love it, and to date, it's been... ok.

However, playing it every single day for the last two months has changed my opinion about it. The Wolfgang pickups sound great. It's balanced well (although I do wish the lower horn was a little longer - it doesn't sit right on me when I play it sitting down). The guitar stays in tune forever. I LOVE the volume pot action. The neck is smooth and comfortable to play for hours on end. The more I play it, the more comfortable I'm finding the neck (my sweaty disgustingness is certainly beginning to stain the maple fretboard, but I kind of like the look, actually).

It does have a few quirks. The neck is still not quite the right shape for me - I've got long fingers, and it still feels a little awkward to play at times (although my Telecaster, which I got in the 90's, has a similar-ish neck shape and I don't have any problems with that one) but I think I'm getting used to it. The pickup selector is still in an odd position, and keeping the D-Tuna working correctly is a challenge. Overall, though, I'm starting to really like this guitar... only four years too late!

Anyway, just wanted to share some thoughts. Mods, if this post belongs in a pre-existing thread, please feel free to move it.

That's great to hear that you're bonding with it after four years. I bought a 2018 MIM Special last year on a Black Friday clearance, and it's quickly become a favourite player. This might be heresy, but I rank it a bit better player than my Gibson Les Paul R9 ('59 Reissue) & on par with my EBMM EVH. Incredible value for the money. I also had to have the frets filed, but it was done under warranty, so no cost to me. Otherwise, mine didn't need ANY setup. Played perfectly out of the box. I actually got it for less than a regularly priced Standard ($699 CAD), and am extremely happy! I could not recommend it any higher:

I really enjoy both of mine. I've owned a Peavey Wolfgang USA Standard since 2004 and while I'd say the Peavey feels more solid in terms of finish the EVHs sound better. Since they're all basically the same woods that mostly comes down to the pickups. The compound radius of the EVH guitars are also superior.

My only gripe with the MIM series is that I wish they had stainless frets. I prefer the jumbo fret size over the vintage fret size, but really wish the stainless material carried over to these.

The hardware of the Standard is the only pitfall for me. It's all so cheap...I just don't care for it. I'm not super tones ears Eddie but I can definitely hear a difference in the USA pickups and the knockoffs....

Yes, the MII EVH Standards use garbage tuners and Floyd Rose Specials.

But the MIM EVH Specials use the same Gotoh tuners and Floyd Rose 1000s as the USA guitars.

The Standard I have got upgraded tuners almost immediately. The Floyd is performing fine so no need to replace it.

My standard tuners are fine. I also prefer the jumbo frets. I did some modifications, but minimal overall and that guitar standsup to my Peavey Wolf Special.

KS 5150, I love the finish on your Special. I've got the gloss black, which I like, but the subtlety of yours is really cool.

I've liked the Standards I've played (well, at least the ones at Sam Ash - the ones I tried at GC were all horribly out of tune and not even remotely set up right, but that's a GC problem, I think). If I was more actively playing in public (as opposed to once in a blue moon), I'd probably get a Standard and keep it as a "bar" guitar. Some dude spills his beer while walking past and it hits the guitar? No worries. Some girl stumbles by and hits the mic stand, which then crashes into my guitar? No problem! Although maybe this speaks more to the bars I tend to visit... sigh.

Hardware-wise, I'm happy with my Special. Like I said in my initial post, you could probably set off a nuclear bomb beside the guitar and it would still stay in tune. Unless I'm going away for several days, mine stays out on a stand so I can pick it up and play it whenever I'm in the mood, and I almost never have to tune.

I have a MIJ Tobacco Burst Special. It is as good as the USA VW and Stealth Grey that I have. It's the Standard hardware and electronics that are sub par

I have a B/W MIM Special and a Natural Quilt MIJ Special, I do think the MIJ Specials are a little better than the MIM (IMHO). The birds eye maple neck with stainless frets, the perliod tuners are a nice touch, I also think the pups are a little more vibrant on the MIJ Special as well. That being said, I love the arch top on the MIM and those classic EVH stripes are super cool! I have a few parts on order from the Stratosphere coming (bought them for my bday) on a Standard I picked up a few days ago. Iíll post some pick and give a review once the parts arrive and I throw it together.

Haha! I never thought I'd be able to ever get an R9. I did have a G0 (Guitar Center exclusive R0) for a few years, and I had to trade up to get that. When my Mom passed away in 2016, I was really bummed out...A couple of months after, I needed a lift, so I sold the G0, put that money together with some savings and a bit of Mom's inheritance, and found this 2013 R9 used on the MyLesPaul classifieds. Thus its named after my Mom, "Mary Jean".

Thank you. 12 years ago, when I only had an Epiphone Les Paul, I never would have thought I would have the collection that I have now. A combination of knowledge, bartering, and dumb luck got me to the place I am now. There's always hope
