    Default D Day-The 6th of June

68 years ago this morning. Darn few of those vets left. I think i'll have a toast for them today, keep them and their sacrifices in your thoughts.

My great uncle was part of the D-Day invasion as a Seabee in the Navy. He actually has done some interviews recently with the History channel and was also on that Ollie North show on Fox about war stories.

His stories range from wonderous--seeing ships as far as the eye could see, lighting up the sky with gun fire--to the tragic--seeing the water turn dark red, bodies and body parts floating everywhere in the surf. 68 years later and he still gets choked up and says a prayer for them when he tells the story. My great uncle is always a happy-go-lucky guy, but you can see his mood change immediately when he starts thinking about D-Day.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

God bless your uncle and every other member of the greatest generation. Thank you all for your love of country, a lesson that needs to be remembered and repeated.

    RIP.

Also, a few days ago in 1942 was the Battle of Midway, which resulted in the US sinking 4 Japanese aircraft carriers, and turning the tide of the war in the Pacific.

    God bless all who serve.

My grandfather was a captain of a troop carrier on the Normandy beach invasion. He used to tell me stories before he died about that day. Told me most of the troops died on his boat because they jumped over the edge of the boat before the rear gate went down and a lot of men drowned as it crushed them. He used to tear up as he said it. War is hell. Thanks to all the men who gave up everything for us.

90% of the soldiers on the first boats to hit the beach didn't live to see the end of the day. Look at those faces. Some of them never made it to 18. Never voted. Never loved a woman, or owned a home.

They gave their lives fighting Hitler and the Nazis, so today's kids can call everyone they don't like Hitler and Nazis.

    Think about that.

I recently saw footage filmed by Canadian troops from inside the boats as they unloaded onto the beaches, giving a 'first person' view of what they faced... Unreal...

RIP to the Allies who died, and a hearty "Thank You!" to those remaining Vets.

One thing I have to give credit to is Dwight David Eisenhower. It takes a certain kind of man to do what he did. From planning to execution and knowing that damn near 8-2 margin of people would not survive. That’s a task I wouldn’t want.

But thank god for him and Gen. Montgomery.

There was a D Day veteran talking on TV today at the office, about how in his Higgins boat, he was the only one to make it through alive. One guy out of 32.

My moms dad was a troop carrier captain in the Normandy invasion. He only spoke of it once after a little too much old grandad. It effected him deeply. I have his zippo that he had on Normandy beach.

That third one back barely looks 16. Having two sons 18 and 21 its impossible to imagine sending them into that, my youngest you darn near still have to remind him to tie his shoes.

Was talking with a Vietnam veteran neighbor yesterday& he mentioned that he only used VA for healthcare now because it’s “free”. Best thing I could reply with was “ no, you paid for it”.
