Default Do you like Elvis Costello?

David Lee Roth definitely didn't like him. How about you?
What do you think about his music?

I admit that I only know the big singles. Veronica is a decent tune. I think he's ok from a musical standpoint.

I like his early stuff a lot (Pump it up, Oliver's army, Peace Love & understanding).

He had a punkier edge mixed with new wave, and weird retro/Buddy Holly vibe.

I was bored by his later, serious stuff, though.

    He’s not my bag.

He opened for Steely Dan a few years ago. I had great seats for the show 5th row can just right of center. I’d been chasing seeing Steely Dan in concert for years...timing and my travel schedule seemed to always work against me.

Anyway, if you’d ever been to Austin, TX (the concert was at the 360 Amphitheater, same place I met a Linker sitting next to me at the Van Halen show)....it is one of the friendliest cities, where striking up a conversation with any random person happens regularly.

I was talking with the guy next to me at the show, telling him how I’d been trying to see Steely Dan since they started touring again in the 90s. He asked me about the opener and I said I’d been to so many concerts up to that point and could only remember a handful of opening acts...I couldn’t care less about them, in fact I didn’t know who was opening. He said it’s Elvis Costello, and I said I only knew a few songs and none of them really did anything for me. I mentioned that I honestly didn’t know we was still touring.

He was there just for Elvis Costello. (Btw not that it matters, but he looked like the type)

He didn’t talk much and when the Elvis came on stage, we were at the bar. When we got back to our seats...he was gone and never returned...too bad to, cuz he missed a great show.

I didn't care for him when he was popular. Now, I've gained an appreciation for his music- at least some of it.

I'm the same way with U2. When their stuff was popular, I thought it sucked. I think U2 music has to be at least 20 years old before I like it. Although I don't think I'll ever like their more modern stuff.

I do. Got turned onto him in 1980 by a kid who sat in front of me in art class who worshiped him.

Somehow I just seem to know the earlier stuff peripherally.

Never actually had any of his albums though until Blood and Chocolate in 1986, which I remember mostly for not being able to choose a single song to include on mix tapes because it just didn't fit in with other stuff I was listening to back then. Now I listen to it and it sounds old school and retro. Haha.

There's a few compilation & Greatest Hits out there and you really can't go wrong with any of them.

One of my secret favorite albums that I don't let people catch me listening to is Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach - Painted from Memory

Oh, and... Nick Lowe is cool!

    He was a great songwriter.

This Year's Model is the main LP I would recommend for people wanting to learn about him... actually released at the exact same time as VH1.

Chrissie H from The Pretenders was heavily influenced by him::

If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

His old stuff kicks! I really like most of his records from the 1970s & 1980s. And I agree with Noise - Elvis wrote many cool songs.

Oh, and I remember he had some project with Burt Bacharach - I gave that record as a gift to my father, a great fan of Burt and he enjoyed it a lot!!

He's had a lot of great songs over the years but he's one of those artists I like a song or two at a time as opposed to listening to an album from beginning to end.
