Default Ted Templeman thinks Sammy is the best!

“Sammy’s a helluva singer. Sammy may be the best singer out there. Period,” Templeman proclaimed. “To me, he’s a combination of Robert Plant and James Brown. That guy can sing like nobody. I’m telling you, nobody. I’m talking just as a singer. He doesn’t know how good he is even. The guy is, I think, the best rock singer on the planet. Period.”

"One of the reasons I left Sabbath was because Van Halen was blowing us off the stage every night. It was embarrassing." -Ozzy Osbourne

"When I first heard "Runnin' With The Devil" on the radio, I was stunned and found myself dizzy, walking through my high school hallways thinking, "What was THAT?!"
Eddie Van Halen was so innovative and kicked so much ass, and David Lee Roth was for a time indisputably the Greatest Man in America.
If aliens came down and challenged us to a Battle of the Bands to decide the fate of Planet Earth, I would feel very confident putting early Van Halen forward as our champion." -Tom Morello

"There is no heir to the throne of Eddie Van Halen. Nobody sits on that throne. Nobody takes that throne. Here's why it's different with Eddie: when a great guitar player passes, you just move on to another, right? But in this case, Eddie wasn't just a 'guitar player'. We're talking about a guy who changed culture and how we play guitar. He was like an alien coming in and fucking everything up so much that even the legends beforehand are like, 'Okay .. what is happening here? What sorcery is this?'" -Nuno Bettencourt

I just heard him do Good Enough the other day and he belted it out. They didn't do the whole song but man for a guy at 72 that can do that. Props to him. See, some of us Classic VH fans are not that bad.

    Cherry.

Well, like him or not, he's certainly one of the best voices, I dunno about the best, not sure there is 'best' outside of Plant, Mercury, Jagger, and McCartney...but he's definitely up there. His pipes have held up longer than virtually anyone else's from his day. His range has always been more versatile than the average rock singer. And Ted's right about one thing...Sam can sing the blues, he just never embraced that genre. But he should've, at least part time.

Ted knows his Sammy, since Sam always had a James Brown fascination, playing in a James Brown cover band, then trying to get James Brown to open for VH in 1986.

For the rest, let me get my popcorn, sit in my comfortable chair, and wait for the usual suspects to start whining...

    Thumbs up

Awesome!!!! I saw Sammy live 3 years ago in the front row, he's still wicked. I can't think of anyone else in their 70's who can still sing like they could in their youth like the Red Rocker can.

When Dave left I was not happy. I knew about Montrose very early on but because I liked Ronnie from Edgar Winter. But when I saw Sammy sing with the brothers it just clicked for me.

Its funny he mentions James Brown. Sammy is very basic with his use of rhythm. Very Wonder Bread. Everything is on the beat like traditional rock singers.

Dave on the other hand is all over the place. Sings behind or ahead of the beats. Also known for his vocal breakdowns which James was known for.

Not going to deny Sam is an incredible singer and he definitely is a better traditional singer than Dave. However best of all time? Ehhhhhh

He can still be the best singer in the world and it not be Van Halen with out Dave, to him. I think these are ok as two separate thoughts 😁

Haven't read the book yet, but Ted still came back in 1991 to do FUCK, so I guess he changed his mind and then DID consider VH with Sam as legit.

As a die hard James Brown fan I can honestly say that I don’t hear an ounce of James Brown in his singing. Wonder what Ted meant in that part of his quote.
"He has a swaggering retro machismo that will give hives to the Steinem cabal" -Camille Paglia on Donald Trump

"But, fucking with Brook is like fucking with hot shit on and ax handle. You just don't get a grip"-track5

"Make way for the bad guy"- Tony Montana

'This hamburger don't need no helper"- David Lee Roth

"I wish Bon Jovi would've given me a call before he recorded all of his hits, because the lyrics would've been smarter, the melodies would've been much more smashing, and they would've sold a lot fewer records." -David Lee Roth

"My beef is people thinking Bon Jovi is good cuz they sold lots of records to housewives." -tango

"But being number one doesn’t really mean jack fuck all. We sold twice as many records as other records that year (1984) that landed in the Number One position." ~Eddie Van Halen
