Ok, thatís the part that so thought you were talking about, but I wasnít sure.

In my opinion, I think that series of notes was a total accident. He never played that part before or since...Iím fairly certain it was just a happy accident! He has played all the other parts live more or less the same before the album version and after the album version was recorded, so that kindíve gives me an indication that it was accidental.

Pretty cool how it all resolves, must have been that good ear.

Well in this instance I wouldnít say an accidental run that ended up sounding good has anything to do with the ear. Itís like when you accidentally sink a ball in pool. It wasnít your skill as a pool player, your touch or your command of the game of pool, your DNA...it was just luck! I suppose somebody-maybe Ed, Ted and/or Donn-listened to it and their ears determined it sounded good enough to put it on the album!

How many times have you accidentally played well? It happens to me all the time, and I canít take any credit for it. Ed used to say in interviews something to the effect of ďSometimes I play something and it sounds great and I have to go back and figure out what I played and I canít. It was just one of those spur of the moment, magical things that you canít count on.Ē That explains this particular lick pretty well to me.

I feel you, just an instance of really going for it and winding up in a good spot, falling down the stairs and landing in your feet, if you will, haha.

Default Soundslice for this "Eruption" Transcription

I had a lot of requests for a Soundslice version of this "Eruption" transcription and a good friend in Germany named Ed DeGenaro was gracious enough to work very hard over a few months to enter this into Soundslice for me. I can't thank him enough.

If you haven't seen Soundslice before, the transcription is on screen along with a YouTube clip of the piece. The transcription moves in time as the YouTube clip plays. Like any YouTube clip, there are playback speed controls...in Soundslice, look for the "%" designation in the control panel at the bottom of the Soundslice screen and select the speed that you want the audio from the YouTube clip to play at and the transcription will follow along at that speed.

Though the format is somewhat limited, it really helps people who for some reason have trouble following and understanding TAB and the timing of notes in that format. This should leave no doubt as to how to follow the transcription along with the actual first album recording of "Eruption":

My pal Doug Steele requested for me to make videos showing how to play the licks I have made TAB for, so I had a little free time today and made these walk-through clips where I explain and play through this ďEruptionĒ transcription. Doug said he canít or doesnít want to read TAB and that there were lots of others like him out there, so here it goes. I think the transcription is pretty easy to follow and the Soundslice file is REALLY easy to follow along with the original recording, but if this helps anyone out there who prefers me showing how to play the parts, Iím happy to oblige!

No problem...and also be sure to look at the Soundslice file in which the transcription follows the original recording at any slow speed that you choose...

So great to see you do this with a completely clean tone. Not enough people do that in lesson videos. It really is how everyone should learn VH tunes (or any tunes for that matter) on guitar.

But with VH, play it clean because Ed's tone isn't as dirty as you think.

Thanks for saying that! I personally believe that everything you say is true. Though I have been getting some comments from people complaining that Iím doing it unplugged or with a clean tone. I personally feel that if Iím TEACHING or demonstrating a lick or sequence, I shouldnít be hiding behind distortion, delay and Phase 90 or flanger. When Iím doing a TONE demo or a complete play-through, THEN Iíll obviously plug in and use all the window dressing.

But as weíve so often said, the thing that eluded people about Eddieís playing is his PLAYING, not how to turn up distortion and kick on a Phase 90 and dual delays for an entire piece.

Thanks again, I truly appreciate you saying that!
