But Beau says, by the second album, after touring, the guys got a lot better.
Recording in a studio is a different gig. I feel I am better live than in the studio, there is just something about playing in front of an audience that brings more out of you. Not saying I am any good to begin with, but I often find my live recordings sound better than I what I do in my basement studio.

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Same for me. So many songs i really love on both records.

Lyrically a bit dark for VH, as well. Don’t think that has anything to do with me like the songs more, but I love a LOT of Ed’s guitar work on these records.

A friend of mine knew Jani, so I put it together for him once as a present after Jani died. There are some good songs on it, you can tell that he really wasn't a metal guy, he was a singer songwriter that just did the 80's hair metal thing because that was what was popular at the time.
I never bought a Warrant record, but really liked Uncle Tom’s Cabin. And saw that interview in the 90s, I think, where Jani explained how/why Cherry Pie came about and how much he hated it. Always got the impression he was a talented guy that didn’t really fit with the hair metal crowd.

Sad he was gone so soon.

LOL. Na, I didn't think that either. But the happy go lucky vibe of the first three was gone with this record. That usually indicates things have changed within the group.

I never got the new musical direction with Sam line.

They were a hard rock band that started introducing some keyboard elements into songs with DLR, and they were a hard rock band that used some keyboard in some of their songs with Sam. Ed's choices of notes, code progressions, phrasings, equipment, etc., yeah, that changed over time. But the musical direction of the band? Really didn't change much from VH1 thru Balance.

Hard rock band singing about love, loss, booze and cars.

I definitely thought "Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)" was Van Halen's nod to grunge. I never cared for that song. Just too morose for VH. Same thing with "Feelin'". Balance was not a fun VH album.

I was surprised when that was the first release for that album. Thought maybe Aftershock or Amsterdam would have been good ones to bring to the public first.

Yeah, I've always thought that Aftershock and Amsterdam were the two most typical VH songs on Balance. The 7th Seal would have been a good first release, also.
