FW has dark tones like WACF, and some dark lyrics here and there, but I don't consider it a huge departure from WACF. Neither of them were "Dancing The Night Away", so to speak. That, and WACF sounds like it was recorded in the Bat Cave. Those two were the darker of the 6. Definitely different records, but still not happy fun time like DD yet.

Balance I consider a bigger leap from FUCK, musically and lyrically. Waaayy darker than the first three. When ya heard you pretty much said " Sam is so gonna be fired".

When I heard Balance for the first time, I didn't hear Sam getting fired, I heard a band evolving with the changing landscape of music. If Sam had stayed and Ed hadn't fallen off the deep end, I feel confident that Van Halen would have shown the fans multiple musical dimensions over the next decade or two.

I love both albums. Fair Warning has some amazing songs on it. If I had any real complaint about Balance, it would be the lack of effects on Alex's drums. That was Alex's decision too. I don't expect them to be this over processed ridiculous thing but Alex told Bruce Fairburn that he just wanted everything to be dry with zero effects and I think have some reverb would have been cool. Nothing crazy with it but a touch here and there as they recorded at 5150 in the drum room and it doesn't sound to me like there is any natural reverb to it. That is unless they releyed mostly on the close mics and had less from the overheads. Either way Alex's sound is too dry for my liking on this album.

Unchained is the most beloved song in the entire VH catalog on this website, but it's no higher than 3rd for me on FW behind Hear About It Later and Mean Street. I would probably have The Seventh Seal 3rd on Balance behind Aftershock and Amsterdam.

I'd still say it was a big improvement on the overmic'd muddy sound of FUCK. And, funny, when you do get to tracks that aren't so muddy, like TOTW or Spanked, I think the toms on FUCK are waaaaay to dry and almost "blah" sounding. However, the toms on Pleasure Dome and Man On A Mission sound pretty good. Just a weird inconsistent album, so disappointing considering it was Andy Johns at the controls.

OU812 still has his best tom sound of the 4 Sam era albums for me.

The drums on FW rarely get discussed, but they are my second favorite of any album behind WACF. Alex just has some terrific sounds going on there.

6 through 9 are so interchangeable for me, though. But the top 5 are set in stone and are all in my top 20 all time tunes, maybe even top 15.

On Balance, Aftershock and Take Me Back are my favs still. Amsterdam has terrific music. Awesome syncopating intro between Ed and Al, great riffage by Ed, great solo, and his outro soloing on tour for this song was some of his best ever. Lyrically, for the most part it is fine, but I'm sorry, I have to knock it a little bit for the insanely stupid and annoying "wham bam! Roll Amsterdam!" chorus. I HATE that line. "Wham bam" just sounds like something Bret Michaels or Jani Lane wouldve written.

I'm not arguing with you but which songs? Being a fan of Sam, I know exactly what you mean because he does do that at times. The 2004 songs were certainly a case of that. Balance is my least favorite of the Sam catalog but I don't see it as a lack of effort on those songs.
